btw, I've got a funny felling the guy might have said last week that he is breaking some 19's as well - if he is do you want me to find out if he has a fuel tank?

This afternoon I went and picked up the replacement ECU. Then when I got back I removed the old ECU, looks nice and clean doesn't it Wink:

Anyway, I then tried starting the car and it's still doing the exact same thing. It just turns over but doesn't start.

The only difference with this new ECU, is that the imobiliser light is no longer lit up on the dash when you turn the ignition on, why would it not light up?

Where can I go from here? is the crank sensor the same on the 1.4 as the 16v? would it be worth trying the one from the 1.4 in there even though the 16v sensor seems OK according to it's resistance?

ECU is the wrong typ ethen, it wont; do anythign if it won;t disengage the immob.

does the wiper stalk have a button on the end of it?

have you plipped it with the doors and bonnet shut?

also that old ECU, why didn't you check it? Its probably the most well known clio problem out there!

ok. I tried plipping the key etc. Yes the wiper stalk does have a button on the end of it - what does it do?

I hadn't checked the ECU because I didn't know about it being a problem with clios and didn't think I would be able to tell anything by just looking at the ECU.

If this is the wrong type of ECU then how do I know which is the correct type? how many different ones are there?

Just compare the ECU part numbers and they are different. But of a bugger as I had thought any ECU from a 16v would work, but obviously not. Does it need to have the exact same part number to work, or are there more than one part number for the ECU that it will work with?

right well if it has the button on the end of the stalk thats to input the immob reset code. You need the code.

How do I go about getting that? And if I enter that will the new ECU work?

ah, I'll need to find it then, lol. I had it a while ago but can't remember where i left it.

Once I have the code how do I enter it?

I hadn't realised the button did anything on the clios tbh, I had thought it was only for trip computers, but the clio doesn't have one.

still not managed to find my handbook, so looks like it's going to have to be a trip to renault and hope i get it for free. I hope it will be free anyway as I don't want to pay for the code only to find it still doesn't work.

ok, just found all the handbook, service booklet etc but theres no code for the imobilser that I can see. Would it just be at the front of the service booklet with the other things like radio code etc? The thing is that the service book is a duplicate so it doesn't have the radio code etc, just the fab no, chas no and type no.

EDIT: ignore that question just read the bit about the immobiliser in the handbook and now looking for the card with the code on it.

Just been down to renault and they want £15 for the code!!! I had thought it would only be £5 or something like that. If I were to get an ECU with exactly the same part number etc as my current one would it work OK without the code? Really reluctant to pay £15 for a code tbh.

The other thing is that from what I understand of it the code just temporarily deactivcates the imobiliser. Would that mean that I would have to enter the code everytime I get in the car if I were to want to use that ECU?

the code ghoes to the bic in the dash which then allows the ECU to power up. you enter it once then plip the doors and thats it.

yuou need to do this with your ECU,. or your grannies if you have changed it.

other option is rip the dash out bin it and get a ph1 dash and fit that

lol, I think the code would be easier than the dash then. I'll just have to fork out then I suppose, I had just hoped that the same sort of ECU would work if you know what I mean because I put the old one back in to see if the immobiliser light came on with it and it came on as usual, unlike the new one where the light doesn't come on at all - doesn't even flicker.

thanks.

opened it up, but can't get a photo just now as someone else has the camera, I'll get a photo later on though when they are back with it. Looks clean tbh, and no water inside it. Just a little bit of the white dust from the outside of the casing is on the inside (but only a tiny amount)
