Im not sure havent really investigated, clicking has gone i guess that was just a random clio noise.

I didn't read it correctly...
Well, in that case you should check the litlle pumps (how u call it?) within the rear drum brakes, could have something to do with the clicking...

For the "clonk", try replacing the flexible brake tubes
For the clicking, make sure the alternator belt isn't getting stripped, if so it may get underneath the distribution belt and brake it ... |

technically the answer wouls be yes.
increased wear means more backlash, thus increased heat.
Mainly a helically cut gear issue, thats why straight cut boxes lose less power.
