cable might be stretching, I assume its fine when it cools down?

You're right - when the engine is cold, it's fine. Is there a remedy?

Each time I came into the pits after a few laps (20 miles approx), it was really difficult to select any gear and impossible to select reverse without a horrible graunching of gear ...
