breather pipes vent gases and relieves pressure from the crankcase (under the pistons) back into the inlet to be put thru the engine again...only put back into the inlet for emmission reasons as the gases are not very nice so easiest to put em back in and burn them.
and what box are you on about? |

on the 8v's theres a breather box fitted on the front of the block, on the 16V a core plugs fitted to the hole.
Like JB says the gasses are nasty and used to be just dumped to atmosphere but thats not very eco friendly plus some knackered cars would just leave a long trail of oil along the road.
On a decent engine thats been run in properly there will be very little blow by thus crap out the breathers. On a poorly run in or neglected engine obviously more gasses will be present.
Engine design has a lot to do with it as well.
Ideally the engine crank case would be in a vacuum, thats what dry sumping can help to achieve, this dries up oil leaks and increases power. |

how come do the breather pipes on my car keep producing that white gunky shayt very fast ,just cleaned them a couple weeks a go and just checked to find it out more white stuff in the pipes ? where is the oil coming from ?
chris told me why it happens once but is it normal after 2 weeks to have the same amount of that stuff in pipes ? do i have a poor running engine? |

the gunk is oil and water mixing, if you don't drive the car far or long enough to boil off the condensation inside the engine then it will simply mix with the oil and give you the mayo.
Take the car a good journey, 100 or so miles as often as you can and it will clear any crapout.
if the cars used regularly and not just 5 miles to work and back then it shouldn't happen at all. If I leave the 16V to idle for 10 mins the filler cap gets the white crap in it, if I take it out a thrash its all gone. You just need to get it hot enough. |
