ive been havin trouble with my valver recently i.e. cutting out when pulling up to junctions, hesitation when pulling away and changing throttle position etc and noticed last night that when i was flat out in 4th the car started holding back as if it was running out of fuel came off the throttle and back on after a second or two and it was ok again only to do it the next time i tried it. ive changed the fuel filter last weekend cos it's done it before and had a facefull of petrol even after i disconnected the fuel pump and left the car to cut out thing is i still had it max out in 5th the other day?!?!
any idea's or help appreciated

sounds a bit like it could be your Throttle Position sensor on the throttle body, a friend had similar probs had it replaced and was good to go..
might be.. |

sensors liek the TPS as elviscat said but the fuel pump may be dying.
Also some 16V's seem to have been fitted with the SPI fuel pumps instead of the MPI's. This doesn't flow enough so you do basically run out of fuel.
But when you slow down it recovers you you will get a load of fuel in the face etc.
Have a look at the relay and see if its got any arcing inside it etc.
Check the MAP sensor and its pipe to. |

update been out an had a fettle this afternoon the fuel pump is dodgy im sure as when im driving hard it holds back and it did it earlier so today instead of easing off to let it gulp some more fuel i kept my foot right down it then slowly died until it cut out then it wouldnt start straight away.. then we put it on a co meter and it came up with
461 p.p.m. vol hc
0.90% vol co
9.22% vol co2
also took voltage reading from fuel pump wires at around 13.4 volts
im thinking either rubbish connection or dodgy fuel pump gonna go hire a fuel pressure gauge tommorow to determine pressure
any ideas appreciated

461ppm is quite high and what is hydrocarbons? yep raw fuel.
i would tend to ignore the emmisions at the moment anyway.
Pump sounds up the creek.
When did you test the pumps plug voltage? Was the engine running or was the ignition on? Witht he engine running is the only way to test it.
Pull the vacuum tube off from the fuel pressure reg at the fuel rail, then stick a screw in the pipe. The FPR will now be refferenced to around 3 or so bar, see if the car improves. I doubt it will but if it does then theres a problem with the regulator. You could also clamp the return line but I wouldn't recommend that.
If you remove the fuel lines you can test the pump, basically get a big bucket, feed the feed line into it and bridge the relay. With the relay bridged you want 2 litres of flow a minute. |

Yeah you need to drop the tank (or cut the boot floor lol) Its easy enough to do if the bolts aren't corroded |

is it a clio?
If so you won't have bolt trouble, they don't seem to rust in, but your car will be the one to prove me wrong no doubt!
Clio tanks plastic also you have 2 tanks and 2 pumps. You have a small aux tank, this is where the filler neck goes into an this has an opening to the main tank. It has a lift pump as well, this when the fuel light comes on pumps the remaining petrol from the aux tank into the main tank.
The gauze I doubt will be dirty unless you have been unfortunate to have a bad tankfull. The clio tanks plastic, the only metal is the filler neck pipe support ring.
Cutting the floor is a quick easy way to do the job.
To remove the pump get a chisel, hold it 90 degrees to the tank put it in the ring then smack the shank of it with a hammer. Don't try and hit it round with the pointy end cos it'll just cut through the plastic. |
