i have been driving this car with this noisy steering rack since i bought it a year a go . i have been to a garage ,the guy told me ,there is nothing to worry about. it is a crunching noise ,i can hear it wheni turn the wheel from side to side .i dont really have problems with it ,but would really like to know if its a common problem with r19s ? whats making the noise ? and is it easy to fix ?

well, obviously i cant say for certain whats making the noise on your car, but mine creaks when turning the wheel, its the front suspension top mounts. Mine are cracked, just like most other people's. Ill end up replacing them at some piint im sure, probably when one of the struts is poking through the bonnet. |

my left top mount bearing makes the noise. I have been meaning to replace it and I shall continue to mean to replace it and maybe even 1 day I will replace it but I wouldn't hold out much hope.
Its gettign worse though, lovely crackign noise when parkign etc. |

well yeah a plane could fall out of the sky and land on the car.
Its most likely just a dry/seized bearing making the noise.
But it may be a balljoint or the rack. |

so in that case can one human being easily detect the offending bearing or rack and stick some grease on it to solve the problem or is it and arm and a leg like sort of job ? |

apparently if you douse the strut top bearing with WD40 it remedies the creaking. Only for a little while though i would imagine. |

well seeign as you have the non 16v (neddy riff raff lol) you have a nice easy to get to strut bearing.
On yours the strut turns within the sping and lower plate. If you take the wheel off and look up the strut under the lower spring seat you will see hole sin the cone bit, squirt wd-40 in them, and then work the steerign back and forth. if the noise goes/changes then thats deffo the source of the prob.
the wd-40 can last for a while believe it or not. |

i changed both mine along with new springs about a yr ago, it was amazing to have silence lock to lock....its just starting to return... |
