I need to go to college and finish off one certificate and I'd have a Software Engineer / Design Diploma... lol Not quite a doctorate, not my thing. |

Same here, talking to my mum about it, now i ain't gonna be a late starter like her so might go back and finish the stuff I left.
You the problem with me is patience, why sit an exam when I could be at Loch Lomond? So thats what I did, never showed up for any of the exams.
I do miss college though, t'was great. Piss easy too, never failed any of the modules or anything, just couldnae be arsed with the exams.
Anyone peopel in school/college/uni reading this, don't follow my example, stay in school get a decent job, if you can get a doctorate, cos you can then put Dr in front of your name. |

have no doctorate either ,and i dont think i can be arsed for any more education in the rest of my lifetime as i feel quite old for such thing .
sometimes you can get decent jobs even without a posh title or a great degree or may be thats just what i want to believe . finished high school passed the uni exams to be an electrical eng. but could not have the chance to even start for some reasons and started working instead while i was 18 .
my sister has got a good degree from the uni ,she finished tourism management as 3rd in her class of 70 students last year ,she wants to go for a master degree now if she can pass the exams . i told her not to stress much about a master as she allready speaks 3languages perfectly (english, german, italian) and i think thats a good start for getting a decent job . |

I am due to complete a doctorate in September 2006, whether or not this happens remains to be seen...
What I would say to anyone considering it would be, it is very different from a degree or any sort of structured course - You mostly do your own thing at a time of the day that is to your liking.
This can be a problem sometimes, especially if you are easily distracted and typically end up getting nothing (relevant) done.
Feel free to ask me any questions. |

I was never one to get my head around education. Why go to school/college where they teach you only what you'll need to know to pass the upcoming test. I was sick of hearing "Oh well x y and z won't me in your exam so we won't bother learning about it" If i pick a subject i actuallt want to learn everything i can about it...
I done a night course on manual and computerised acounts a few years back but 0% of what i learnt there was any good to me. Anything i know i picked up from working, same with computers and cars or anything really |

What doctorate are you hoping to get Stephen?
I know what you mean Chet. TBH school is where I forgot most of everything. Intresting fact my handwritings terrible but before I went to school I wrote like Shakespeare, all joined up etc. but the school after all they know best forced me to write like the other idiots, sorry children and it ferked me writing up good and proper. |

I hated school.....not so much the school itself, but the knowing that i could be doing something else. I'd much prefer to be blasting round on my crosser and just generally dossing with my m8's, than revising for my exams, thats why i fucked them up (A'levels)!! |

The (shortened) title of the research is "User interfaces for building System-on-chip". This is very broad, so the specific area we are addressing involves modelling hardware components (and systems) in such a way as to accelerate the design of such.
We are using Java as the modelling language and bringing the features of this langage to hardware design.
The area is a mixture of hardware and software. Hardware is a new area for me as I am from a Computer Science background.
PhD - Doctor of Philosophy
I didn't particularly like school, it's because you had to do lots of subjects that you had no interest in. The best bit was meeting all your friends every day and having laugh.
I didn't go to one of my French exams (as I was raking an old Audi 80 Sport around the fields!) and subsequently got a well deserved F.
I also failed my English exam!
Education is a means to an end. |

Thanks, I'll give it my best shot.
What subject are you thinking of perusing?
What might suit you best, would be to go for something similar what Stan is doing. This will combine your interests and lay a good foundation to lead you towards a specific research area.
The demand for research in that area dictates the likelihood of obtaining funding and the entry requirements.
A year or two ago a friend was doing research (in the University) for Holset, designing new compressor housing. He managed to blow one of the turbos up due to fatigue in the blades of the compressor!
Oh, funding - the important bit!
Currently research students get over £10K tax free, rumoured to rise to £12K next year.
You can then do some part time work to use up your personal allowance, so that’s over £15K income without paying any tax. |

got an HND in electronic engineering , now all I do is telecoms admin
I was a mature student, best time of my life, I would like to go back and do mechanical engineering,
Chris imo go for it you will enjoy it because its something you want to do, nobody is making you do it, and in passing your course it will give you a great deal more self confidance even if you are a confident person already go for it |
