not that it has to have the smell of roses ,i recently noticed i have that killing smell coming from the exhaust . when i start the car up and i am standing by the drivers door ,i can smell it . i stop to pick someone up the passenger side door opens and i can smell it in the cabin.
about 5 weeks ago i had the lambda sensor changed due to wrong emissions and passed the mot ,since than all i did was to cut a bit of the exhaust backpipe to stick the new trim in ,no harm to the exhaust itself . but while doing the job i realised there is a small leak in the back box .
so with all this information in hand could anyboy tell me whats going on ?
its a sort of smell makes me think the fuel is not burnt properly .
cheers |

now it sounds a bit noisier than it used to as well .i think i deffo need a new cat which means i am not buying it and will go for a decat which is not easily found for a 1.8 rt as far as i know . any ideas ??
would taking the existing ferked cat out and punching the insides out and putting it back in be a good idea ? or how can i make a straight through pipe myself? how can i find the diameter of the pipe before taking the cat out ? |

all cars after 93 have to be SUPPLIED from the manufacturer with a cat.
It is not illegal not to have a cat, but it is illegal to fail an emissions test (which you probably will do without the cat). So, cat on for MOT, off again once its through. Having done this, if you then fail a roadside emissions test, you could be fined £60 and get a VDRS...but lets be honest - when was the last time you had (or even heard of someone else having) a roadside emissions test? |

there is no law stating that any car has to be fitted with a cat in the uk. It just it needs to be there to get the emmisions low enough.
You can legally de-cat yours as it was made bfore 31st aug92.
Anyway you can just smack the internals out. I find a broom pole and a hammer does it well.
Its hard work btw. However yours may have broken up quite a lot so most might just fall out.
You can just stick it back on as hollowed out but this isn't ideal. My chamades currently running a hollowed out cat. Ideally you either get a straight pipe fitted or get a straight pipe inserted into the cat.
The reason is the cat is then an expansion box and its closest to the engine, so gasses are still hot and they will slow down a lot, not what you want. |

Two months ago, friend of mine got cought in Leith in Edinburgh on a Saturday morning for an emissions test.... morning after the night before and they decided to breathalise him.... got done for drink driving..
They do a lot of them, see them all over so I wouldn't count your chickens |
