but lets be honest - when was the last time you had (or even heard of someone else having) a roadside emissions test? |
Two months ago, friend of mine got cought in Leith in Edinburgh on a Saturday morning for an emissions test.... morning after the night before and they decided to breathalise him.... got done for drink driving..
They do a lot of them, see them all over so I wouldn't count your chickens |
so what happens if you fail a roadside emission test then? |

if you fail it you get an on the spot 60quid fine then you get a vehicle defect form and a producer.
You need to go to a MOT station get them to sort the emmisions if needed then the defect form stamped, this can cost anywhere from a fiver to a full test fee.
You have to produce that along with all your documents at the local police station. If you don't it goes to court. However if you hear nothing for 6 months you won't hear anything at all about it.
The main problem is its council workers who have no idea at all about engines etc who do these test police are there to hopefully get some cash and an arrest if they are lucky.
Often the probes etc will have been lying on the ground in a puddle etc. Often cars have long been started so cold start enrichment is still on so it will be runnign very rich. But that doesn;t matter if it faisl when tested even if it passes 5 mins later you still get a defect slip and a fine.
basically its another way to do over the public. |
