16v are not unreliable if maintained properly. The problem is that they are bought cheaply by neddy little boy racers who rag the arse off them and never service them or open the bonnet. 1.4s on the other hand tend to be owned by grannys and housewives who dont rev them over 3000 rpm and have them serviced religiously.

yeah, coolings not the best admittedly, but again, if maintained properly it is perfectly adequate. As for running costs if you mean economy, well youre not going to run a 1.8 for the same money as a 1.4 are you.

Yep, so does my 106,000 mile 16v, you know why? yes, thats right, because i maintain it

So you've driven a 16v have you? been in one? no, didnt think so.

Er, its not to impress, ok, so maybe some of it is. But the main thing is to ENJOY driving and have FUN doing it and I can assure you, a 16v is a lot more fun to drive than a 1.4. If you want to save money, get a diesel. |

Cool you'll have to give me some tips, do you do a back flip out of the sunroof or something? I find getting out of a car pretty mundane really, definately not something I would impress anyone with... |

The 2 best cars iv owned where my 1916v's, as for being unreliable ...well lets not forget that the youngest one is now going on for 10yrs old and as Neal rightly says, they get bought cheaply by neds who just thrash the living daylights out of them, never bother checking the oil levels, use cheap rubbish replacement parts on them or give them a quick check over ever week or so, then have the cheek to say they're crap when they breakdown
Buy a decent 1916v thats been looked after and serviced regulary, and providing you do the same then you'll have fun fun fun and a smile the joker would be proud of |

i've had 4 16 valvers and all have been reliable, no major probs with any of them. just the usual wear and tear of daily use, same for any car 12 years old + |

this one has been the most unreliable I have owned, its over 120k.
The 1.4 with 205k had a new clutch, alt, water pump etc etc more than this one has had, so its about evens.
To be fair this one has been through 8 previous owners and the last one was super ned. |
