Never quite figured out why you still need 3rd party insurance even if your car is parked up on a public road and sorned.

I can't imagine ever being able to make a successful claim with an insurance company in those circumstances, as any valid claim you might have would have to be so wacky as to be unbelievable! If its sorned, then you can't actually drive it on a public road obviously, as you won't have any tax, so you would have to cause damage in some obscure manner.

I guess if your car spontaneously exploded and blew up some other cars or something then you could claim, or if you parked on a steep hill and the handbrake decided to come off like in those morethan ads Smile

Am I just missing some point or other here?

Could be an interesting topic - how you could cause injury to a third party with your car without actually driving it... Wink

sorry might be a bit dim but I thought the whole point of sorn was to keep your car off road so you don't have to pay car tax or get it re registered when you put it back on the road. ie a sorn car cannot be kept on a public road.

Ahhh never thought of that Chris - well tbh I would have thought of it, but I just assumed that if you drive into someones car, causing it to smash into another car, you would be held responsibile for all the damage that resulted from your automotive bowling exercise! Seems a bit stingy that you could cost someone their no claims by driving into their car when they weren't even in it, and making them liable for any damage that their car caused because of your impact. Actually thats kinda scary Confused

Sorn 3rd party liability is there for people who dont have an off road area to store their car..

you can technically drive any journey you want with no tax or MOT...
just call and book yourself in at an MOT centre where the journey is you want to make.. and dont turn up..lol.. however i dont condone this behaiviour.

I thought sorn stood for Statitutary Off Road Notification therefore if you are inspected and you can be, although highly unlikely and your car is on the road you will be fined I believe min £1000.

"sorn declartion is to confirm that the vehicle is not used or kept on the public road" un quote taken from form v11 so therefore as per my point before if you have a sorn vehicle why do you need insurance in case some body should hit it Question Question

if another car collides my car in my private drive or anywhere else ,its their problem thus their insurance will have to pay out ,not mine .so it does not make sense to have 3rd party insurance for a car declared off road
