Rust! (Suprise suprise)

Bottom of my driver side rear arch is slowly rusting away? Whats the best way of sorting this? Thinking it might be best left to a pro? (or at least someone who knows what their doing?)

im just waiting for mine to start rusting...

I think you can have a bash DIY, get all the rust out, fill it and spray it but tbh I dont think it will look very good. Best get it done professionally, but at the end of the day, do you really want to spend that much money on getting it done?

depends how bad it is. If its just surface then treat it yourself if its holed then to the welders ye go.

Mine needs welded.

how much would it cost to have it done professionally ???
i would do it myself to be honest ,depends on the color as well .my car is black and dont really have problems blending .

if there is a hole ,just get rid of the rust with sand paper , cover inside the hole with hammerite and fill it with reinforced body filler with added glass fibre (you can get it for 6quid in a motor shop) . smooth it down and spray , welding is not necessary me thinks . you can always do a pro job if you try hard enough .

i have been quoted over 150 quid for a small patch of rust on my fiesta once ,i have been rather offensive after Evil or Very Mad

I just had mine looked at,

to repair and spray both top seals, de - rust and spray the front wing, spray the rear bumper and blow in some other bits and pieces I was quoted Â£165 all in.

having had a closer look through the pannels by the back seats I noticed that the rust had got in there and was going holey. to fix that and blow in the rear quarter where it was scabby I was quoted a further Â£60 for both sides.

not to bad realy, but it depends on where you go.

Well i've cleaned it up all back to the bare metal as far as I could get it, chucked on lots of rust killer, left that, cleaned it off and covered with a fair ammount of metal oxide paint, hopefully that should stop it spreading till I can get it sorted .

Oh, and I found a nice big hole at the top of my back wheel arch Rolling Eyes

the hole will need welded.

If you fibre glass any hole in a structural area then your a retard and deserve top die when the car falls apart.

I need under my rear seat squab and the bottom of the rear arches welded. No doubt there will be more when I yake the side skirts off.

Hah, I aint touching that hole, its near the top of the shock so i'll be having that welded properly.

If the hole was somewhere thats wasnt structuraly important i'd probably fibreglass it, but i'd rather not risk this one

im gunna be doin it myself...rear arches and a few holes in the sills...just clean loose rust off...kurust and paint etc...

on the holes, just clean the hole out to a neat shape and weld a small panel in behind it...fill and paint.

like someone up there said, who wants to pay what could be the cars value on fixing a small patchof rust...?

More on the issue on rust Smile

I got a couple of rust bubbles on both of my R19's. Both of them are blue 454.
I was wondering since some of them are on middle of doors for example, how much around the spots needs sanding and treating?
Is this kind of blue color difficult to blend in ?

Any step guidelines regarding sanding and priming? ie what paper to sand with at what stage etc...

Im new to this kind of fixing but i wanna learn Embarassed

Well, blue is a fairly easy colour to blend, depending if it is metallic/pearlescent etc. when im doin rust where i work, i sand down around 6 inches from the rust using 80, then 120 grit, then flat down(take the shine from the surface of the paint) a further 2-3 in with 1500 grit wet and dry paper.as where you flat it is where you blend into, you must prepare the surface properly, as if you dont, the finish will reflect this,BUT if you use primer this will show when blending. do use a bit of primer just on the bare metal parts though, then this must be rubbed down, but not to bare metal. i suggest not using spray can primer/paint/laquer as the finish will not look any where near as good as if it was using a spray gun.
