right quick question with turbo does the intercooler sit before the turbo ie cooling the charge before it is compressed or after the turbo but before the inlet. |

omg man, I refrained form postign when I saw this but really david, have you been taking stupid pills?
What does an intercooler do? Cool air.
What medium does it use to cool this air? Ambient air.
What point is it cooling ambient air down to ambient temp, i.e no bloody difference then cook that air!
i am dissapointed in you my boy! |

When air is compressed it heats up. As warm air is less dense than cool air (and it is cool air that we want) then an intercooler is used to cool the compressed air down to the ambient air temperature.
Iced water spray cools the air down even more, thus making it denser, which is good.
If the intercooler was before the turbo it would serve no positive purpose at all. The ambient air would be sucked in at 12oC and would be 'cooled' by ambient air at 12oC. There is no point; in fact it would serve as an airflow restriction and additional weight, thus degrading the performance of your car.
Correspondingly when air is decompressed it cools, as a practical example this can be felt when spraying a compressed air through a nozzle onto your hand.
Hope this helps. |

"in theory" there could be a purpose in putting a heat exchanger BEFORE the inlet of a turbo...since forced convection accross the exchanger wouldmean that the cooling effect of the the ambient air would be less than ambient.
practically speaking tho......!! |
