do renault use some special T55 torx head to undo thier headbolts ?
mine only goes into the 4 holes at the corners, it wont fit thru the central 6 holes to get onto the head bolts, same with the head i got off JB. |

ffs, mine is the halfords pro 1/2 inch one
not having any pigging luck with the POS car at the mo,
cant free off the downpipe to exhaust manifold nuts either,
left them soaking in wd40 whilst i thought i would free off the headbolts.
Prolly heatgun the bastards tomorrow and try that
thats the only thing stopping the head coming off lol.
i'll pop down the halfords in the morning and try to get a 3/8 drive one (i will take my 1/2 one along too and see if the circumfrence is different) |

I had to take the rocker cover off and use an extension on my headbolts. It's a draper socket 1/2 drive. |

well its too dark to do anything more tonight
but i have prepped the other head all ready to go on.
mating faces all cleaned up free of old gaskets, all the ports and injector holes given a good cleaning out, and blown thru with the airgun, distributor on, thermostat housing with new thermostat on. exhaust manifold with new gasket on, inlet manifold with new gasket on, injectors, fuel rail and plugs for them on, new cam belt tensioner on.
oil has been drained out of the car as has the coolant, new sump nut, washer and filter ready to go on.
new alt belt waiting to go on and new idle pully and cambelt.
new headbolts arrived as well
whilst the head is off, i will remove the down pipe and put on the PAS rack and steering column.
gonna be a busy weekend . . |

well i got a 3/8 torx 55 and yes it fits down the holes . . but when i tried to undo the first bolt, the torx 55 snapped in half!!!
so took it back to halfords and swapped it for another one.
all the headbolts are loose now, just one bolt stopping the head coming off at the mo and thats one of the exhaust downpipe bolts, simply cant get it to budge, it sits too close to the downpipe to get a socket onto it and i cant get enough leverage on it with a spanner . . arghhh
cup of coffee and a cig time whilst it continues to soak in more wd40. |

thats the way i am going now, again, stuck on one damn bolt, middle bottom bolt of the manifold, all the others have come out fine and yes i did take off the manifold-starter bracket.
the middle bottom bolt is coming slowly, very slowly, cant get to it from the top cos of the stud above it, i can get a spanner on it but no room to turn it, from under the car i am slowly getting it turned.
just took off the bottom cover and alt belt and my god! the cam belt had shredded it self to almost nothing at that point.
I will post pics later of it in my progress report. |

the bastard is off at last . . .
looks like this was a good thing really that this happened, the headgasket was on its last legs like i suspected so the head would have had to have come off at some point in the near future anyway.
pics will be in my progress report. |

well schaks, thats one of the reasons i am dropping a F7R into the ph1/ph2 hybrid, hopefully get some more reliability out of it.
once i have done that on the ph1/ph2 car and it works out, i will prolly sell the ph1/ph2 hybrid and use the money to do the same to the ph2.
Or i could just transfer all the good stuff from the ph2 onto the ph1/ph2 hybrid like the leathers, zorst, gearbox etc and that will save me a hell of a lot of work on the ph2 and just scrap whats left of the ph2. |

reliabilty? Why is it any better with a F7R lump? Its not.
the crack in block I would more than likely say theres a 90% chance that coolant froze at some point due to not being changed often enough and cracked the block.
If the coolants changed often, the oil as well and a good standard of maintenance then the engine will take years of use in its stride. |
