I have a 19 16v Cabrio....(94)...
When I put it in reverse the gears crunch. All foward gears are ok and operate with no probs.
The way around the problem is I stop....put the clutch down and put into 1st gear. I then lift the rear gear selector on the gear stick and then quickly put it into reverse. Some times a little crunch happens but most times it goes into reverse without a problem.
What would the problem be here? and what can I do to rectify it? andif so what do you think it would cost to sort it?
All advice is appreciated on how to fix this as I don't want to just put up with it?
Many thanks in advance.

all cars boxes are like that aside from the select few that have synchro on reverse gear.
Reverse gear unlike the other foward gears is not in constant mesh, to select reverse you have to actually move a gear into mesh with 2 other gears. You do this whilst the box internals are still spinning then the result is a crunch.
Its not helped by sticky/warped clutches etc. |
