Right then. My rear wheels have decided to start playing hide and seek with me. In the last couple of days they have moved about an inch and a half further up into the arches. What could it be? Tortion bars? |

the scary version? the bits of the shell that the rear beam mounts to have rusted to buggery and are deforming. Look under the plastic trim bits under the seats in the back
Otherwise, i dunno. |

Nope no rust on the car at all that I can see. Even the rear arches look pretty clear a little amount of surface rust but no bigger than a 1p coin.
I folded forward the rear bench and looked under the carpets but everything looks clean and tidy with nowt out of place. Is that where you meant? |

I'll have time to have a proper look when i finish work. I doubt that it would be that though simply because I haven't found rust anywhere on the car apart from that surface rust on the rear of the rear arches which is small enough to be treated very easily concidering it's size. |

shocks do affect ride height my good man neal ,in my case they were buggered to death and were not able to lift anything up.
the rear end was shaking like a polaroid picture even with 20mph |

shock ABSORBERS dont affect ride height. There's no question.
They are absorbers, they settle at whatever height the springs 'are at'.
Hence why you dont NEED uprated shocks when you're lowering your car. Also the reason you cant lower your car by changing shocks.
The spring affects ride height. The shock absorbers absorb shocks.
It may well depend on the suspension setup - although i doubt it.
if anyone is in any doubt, try taking your shocks off.
schakal, since when did shocks do any lifting? and its pretty obvious that dead shocks = poor poor ride, you're basically just running on springs. |

actually a shock absorber is the proper name for th espring device, i.e the spring or the torsion bar, the damper is the damper. A common missconception btw.
They CAN affect ride height, some have sprung rebounds so they lift the car a few mm.
But liek I said in the last argument they do not affect ride height, and if they do its because they are on the bump stops and removing them lets the car drop further. |

Fair do's this went a bit off topic while i wasn't around. To answer a couple of questions and clarify a bit the the tyres are about 1cm into the arches but they were about 2-3cm below the arches before I noticed the change.
Also nothing in the boot has changed, a sub, two amps, the jack and a spare underneath. I did take the wheels off on sunday and have a quick look. the left side seemed OK whereas the damper on the right was absolutely cream crackered. Managed to find a replacement damper on sunday! and fitted it. Much better ride but the height is still off.
It occured to me that it only happened after I was driving back from Brighton with a full car. Got a bit bumpy probably fromthe damper being screwed. what could the problem be as I haven't really worked on the back end of the 19 yet I don't know what to look for really. Is it possible the tortion bars have managed to click down a notch? |
