Hi i have recently aquired a Garrett / Airesearch Turbo Unit from a renault 25 V6 i have been told that this can be fitted to a renault 5 Gt. However my question is does anyone know what pressure the wastegate will open at? i don't want to run too much boost! is there any way it can be adjusted? i know that mechanical controllers can run increased boost, but i may need reduced boost, any help is greatfully received.
Many thanks tom |

adjust the actuator rod will change the oipenign pressure as will fitting a dawes device or similar.
No one knows what yours will open at you will need to find out yourself. |

Good, was hoping that would be the case! i didn't see how that would work though! is there a way of checking what pressure it will open at? other than sticking it on a car? |

footpump with a gauge on it is a good way to check.
it will crack open a lot sooner than you think when its fully open thats max boost |

that auto pumps you pump your tyres up in morrissons etc could help you on that i suppose
make a an airtight mechanism engine with a tyre valve and stick the pump in and check the pressure on the gauge as it opens |

well i have managed it! i cut down an bike inner tube, a knackered one. and wedged it in the tube coming from the wastegate and used a bike pump with a gauge on it. However i think the gauge is inaccurate as the gate starts to open at 10psi and is fully open at around 25-30psi! this seems a little high as i want to run boost less than this! how do i adjust the actuator? does anyone else think this is high? am not experienced in these matters!
many thanks tom |

ys its high.
you need to lengthen the rod to reduce the press which it opens. |

hey again, something different this time, i have an intercooler to go with the turbo, one from a renault 5 gt. There are two openings at the top which are obviously where the air goes in and out, i think it doesnt matter which way round the air goes but the openings are different, they have the same bore but one of them has a cylinder of bronze or something inside it its much smaller than the bore of the opening. does anyone know what this is?is it important? does the air flow direction matter for an intercooler? ur help is greatly appreciated!

direction isn't an issue. The brronze thing is a thermostatic control. the gtt is a carb and therefore suffers carb icing.
So when the airs cold the thermostatic flap opens and the air goes into the engine un-intercooled. A popular trick is to remove the stat and block it off permanatly so the air goes through the cooler at all times.
The bit with the bronze is the inlet btw which is the left hand side iirc. |
