Legend of the rear bearings

Finally got the bearings out of my rear discs.

Started the other weekend trying to smack them out with a socket and small lump hammer.

When that didn't do the job I brought them into work. Here's what we tried today:

2lb lump hammer + piece of metal bar = No effect

Fly press = No effect.

Fly press + Del (17st.) hanging on it = No effect.

Fly press + scaffold pole + Del hanging on it + me and gareth hanging off the other side of the press to stop it falling over = Fly press handle bends.

14lb sledgehammer + piece of metal bar + anvil = No effect

Oxy-acetylene + piece of metal + 14lb sledge hammer + anvil = Inner races disintegrate leaving outer races in place.

Adrian appears and informs we can use the hydraulic press if we want as it's working again

Oxy-acetylene + hydraulic press.... force on gauge peaks at nearly 10 tons and the bearings release with a BANG.

Shocked

Next time I hear someone say the rears come out easy I will laugh.

Now I've just got to put the new bearings in. Once ive emeryed the corrosion from the inside of the discs they should go in nicely without even bending the flypress handle again Rolling Eyes

stupid woman.

I was doing u33db's front bearings the other day, the hydraulic press went wellinto and above the red 20ton zone and pump stopped workgin a few times due to that. Eventually they freed off but inside the carriers was corroded.

I mind gettign asked to change some rears, he had only been tryign to bang them out with the circlip still in! I popped it out and with a socket and gentle tap they moved.

Would it not have just been easier to get some new rear discs? Mmmm shiny.

Pop in easy enough though.

I have just finished a battle with an exhaust stud in a spare 16v manifold which is destined for ye olde hatch.

just got a set of new rear discs with the bearings already pressed in Smile

yes, its easier to do that, but my discs are fine, why throw them away and pay more if all they need is new bearings?

i'd have to go the new discs route as i dont have access to a hydraulic press or a flypress to get the old buggers out.
