Hi all, am new to Retro Ren, need some info - have got a 1991 16v Chamade, was driving about 60mph today, went to change down from 5th to 4th but couldn't, gearbox totally stiff. Struggled short distance home, once parked up gearstick was very stiff in neutral. Haven't had any probs with gearbox before and clutch was new last year. Is this likely to mean a new gearbox, or just a very sad farewell to my 16v? Any advice/info much appreciated, thanks. |

could be many things.
1st thing I'd check is the box oil level. It shoudl dribble out of the level/filler plug ont he front of the box, if it doesn't stick your finger in, if theres no oil then the box has had it.
If thats ok then the linkage needs looked at. |

Hi guys. Chris H - thanks for advice. Being a girl who knows little about engines etc I am going to have to take my 16v to a garage to get looked at. The place I went to last yr to fit the clutch also specialise in gearboxes, they are quoting £745 for a new one if that's what it takes. Can't bear thought of losing her so will probably end up forking out for that.
Chet - I'm a bloke really lol Seriously though, good to hear you're pleased there's a girl on here! |

£745 is too much, it would buy a good low milage spare 19 16v with a donor gearbox, plus labour obviously. |

Like Stephen says £745 is way to much.
All the valvers I have bought have never even amounted to that!
Where are you based, if your near too Glasgow I can have a look for you.
If not then one of the other lads may be so kind to have a gander for you.
Anyway if it does need a replacement box then Infinicar will supply you one for a lot less. and one of us if were close enough may fit it for a reasonable rate if its the box thats gone. |

OMG this is turning out to be a nightmare now - don't know whether just to get it fixed or what. Got her for £800 in June 2001 with only genuine 50k on clock, did all sorts of mods when first got her, have since had head gasket and clutch replaced, new tyres etc. Have spent loads on mods and repairs etc since 2001, seems shame to maybe have to let her go now esp as in mint condition for year except this ruddy gearbox prob. Sorry guys if I'm being a silly whingy girl but I really don't know what to do. |

Well thats a bit far for me Claire sorry!
A 2nd hand but good box from Infinicar should cost less than £100 and getting it fitted should at most be another £200. |

Sadly haven't got any pics to download (of the car anyway!) at the mo, if i did then you could see why I'm desperate to keep her, but is silver grey, 1991 H-plate, immaculate inside and out, just a few dinks on offside wing. Kenwood sound system, momo steering wheel etc, all sorts of engine mods inc. K/N filter, twin exhaust etc.
Have just been to Infinicar's site, there is a pH1 16v on it so have e-mailed to find out how much for gearbox if it comes to that... |

Pauls (Infinicar) got plenty of ren spares, not been to his for a while but you don't need to worry about availability.
Is it a hatch or chamade you have? H plate should be a proper ph1 shell as well which is very good as they don't rust like the ph2 shells. |

Just an update - my other half had a look at her when he got home and drove a fair distance without any problems at all! Reckons it could be a loose spring or clutch prob, will still get car looked at anyway at some point but might not be as bad as first thought... |
