A m8 has just bought a Rover 416 1.6 16v on an R plate. I know nothing about these cars. What are they like? Good or crap? From what I see they use the K series engine, would this be the one that had bad rep for headgaskets? (plastic dowells or somthing?)
Any info appreciated

The had Gasket WILL fry at some point (unless it's been done).
The cooling system is tiny, meaning the least little thing will cause it to go.
The engine (when running) isn't bad - they're pretty powerful.
*I'm fixing a 214 16v at the minute fom head Gasket failure - going to scrap it though (unless anyone wants a free car with a fully reconditioned head)
The underpinnings are based on the old Honda Civic. |

where are you steve?
they are ok but but they are not reliable I would say. Engines are ok the gasket will have gone by now, its th erest of it that falls apart |

Kilmarnock mate, I just dont have time to totally fix/break it whatever, got the new gasket etc as well. Half a years MOT as well.. Taxed til end of June - It's taking up space though! |

nah, thats the main issue tbh, I attempted the job, got it down to the block, got the head repaired, and so on. Just had absolutely no time to put it all back together, and can't see me having that time.
TBH, I just don't think I have the experience to see the job through, it's a right shame, cos the car is in good nick mostly. |

A Bit of history on the car.
Got the car for a reasonable price off a mate.
A week later, Head Gasket goes! My "mate" is on a year out in Australia - so no come back!
Exhaust appears new, as do 3 of the tyres.
V5C been "lost".
Taxed 30/06/06
MOT 20/12/06
Engine other than the hgf looks good.
My stupid fault for taking it on without the experience.. lesson learnt, but I'm left with it now..! |

it's the timing thats buggering me up, it's supposedly to be at 90 btdc, but I got told conflicting stuff. A mechanic I use says "nah, TDC is fine", so I move the block to TDC, to find it that it MUST be at 90 btdc. Which means I now need to remove loads of crap I wouldnt have had to before!(Crank pulley bolt, pulley, bottom cover, aux belts etc etc, despite the fact the belt itself is only 2k old - has the mileage tipexed on it)
My dream at the moment is for a nice experienced mechanic come and do it for me lol!
The joys of motoring eh? |
