Hi,

I’ve got an ’89 renault 5 GTS with a clutch problem. I picked the car up at the weekend with a snapped clutch cable. No problems I thought, chuck a new cable in and jobs a good ‘un. Anyway, old cable came out no worries, and new cable got routed in pretty easily, my problem has come about at the ratchet adjuster on the clutch pedal.

Basically if I connect the cable all up doing the pedal end first and then the gearbox end, as soon as you try and push the clutch pedal in its springing out of the mechanism. It was driving me mad reconnecting it all and then as soon as any pressure is applied to the pedal it pops off.

Is there something I am missing? Haynes just says its usual ‘fitting is the reverse of removal’, and as far as I can tell that is what I’ve done.

My only thought up to now is that the cable I got off ebay is a pattern part rather than a genuine renault item, maybe the stop on the pedal end of the cable is too small?

Any help is much appreciated,

Ta

Hello matey!

I'd suggest using Renault parts every time. I had a myriad of cable failures on the Clio and although I knew what the problem was all along the Renault items lasted a lot longer than the QH equivalent!

Did you replace the ratchet adjuster when you fitted the new cable?

Sounds like a worn plastic part of the pedal assembly not up to the job any more to me but I'm no expert by any means!

grammar pedant mode...

The use of the word 'myriad' as a noun in that way is not strictly correct, though it is widely used.

Should be used as an adjective: "I had myriad cable failures on the clio"

/grammar pedant mode.

Is he the one on the forum that like to take things off topic too

Anyway, problem all sorted now. The genuine renault cable solved my misery. I should have gone for it first time out, it only cost just over £20 from the local dealership, the 'bargain' cable I got off fleabay was £8.50 delivered, but by the time I'd driven down to my parents twice to get the car sorted all of what I would have saved with the cheap cable was burnt in petrol  oh well, I'll put it down to experience I guess

Cheers for the help though people :)
