every head I have done thats been on a car I have had to hit the caps with a hammer. I have done a few 24v heads in my time to. Only takes seconds.

are we confusing hitting the caps with a hammer to release the collets (instead of using a compression tool) with using a compression tool and then hitting it to release the collets if they dont fall out?

no not to release the collets.

A sharp tap on the cap to free the cap from the collets so you can compress the springs.

bent valves are a pain to release. Especially ones which are well bent and the valves fully open.

belting the springs is a good method really ,otherwise some collets are stuck there and there is no way you can compress the spring in my case.

i used a spark plug socket for the belting jobby

spring compresses easy after

nice and easy does it everytime. i put the spring and valve bit in sandwich bags and draw the location of them on the head .did not know if it did matter or not but looks tidy
Image

here is a set of them .dont know which ones are inlet and which ones are outlet ones . there are 4 small and 4 bigger valves in diameter any clue??
Image

all removed from the head now.is there any thing that i can take out before a good clean???

having fun then mate! Good stuff.

the smaller valves are the exhaust valves. You will also notice the exhaust valves shape is different. Where the stem meets the head, this is called the tulip btw. Inlet is flatter, like a plate on a stick, whilst the exhaust is more tapere, moe like a cone.

I assume you don't have the camshaft?

See the silver round things where the rockers used to sit on, opposite end to the valves, i.e in the middle. These are the hydraulic lifters, remove them. The should pull up and out, but if the heads old and tatty then they may have mushroomed. if so push them down into where th ecam lives and pull them out.

Also you can remove the valve stem oil seals and thus the lower valve spring seats.

yes thats the cam.

yes just pull the lifters out by hand. If they don't pull out you need to remove the cam anyway and push them down.

the cam is held in by a thrust plate. 2 10mm bolts hold it in if I remember rightly.

take the bolts out and you need to remove the thrust plate.

Cam should just slide out. On the cvh if I remember rightly it comes out the dizzy side.

so the thrust plate slides out upwards yeah and i have to use a pliers to pull it out first in order to remove the camshaft?

yep slide the thrust plate out, might need to jiggle the cam back and forth to let it coem out but after that it should slide out.

If the tappets are still in the head turn it upside down and spin the cam round. This will allow you to pull it out without catching on a tappet.

the thrust plate is out ,was quite easy once i stuck the big bertha (thats the name of the screw driver i use,its big) underneath the side of the plate and hammered the screw driver.

but camshaft is another job .it does not seem to be moving at all ,saying that i did not have a chance to mess with it much. on the other end of the camshaft there is a round metal head with a split in the middle .i reckon i have to stick a flat metal bit in there and try to turn over. might soak it in wd40 overnight though for easy removal

if the cams not turning then yep wd-40 or similar over night it is. Spray some wd on it then pour a little normal oil in with it.

cillit bang will do it.

As for the springs well they are probably knackered now mate.

As for the valves stick em in a drill and run a scothbrite pad up and down em.
