I smoke, several things at that. I do agree it is a horrible habit. Having been a non smoker and a smoker I can see both sides of the argument. However I feel it is a crude of the government to completely ban in public places, with out giving any option (Ie dedicated smoke rooms etc). You’ve got to remember that smokers have rights as well, if they want to do it it is after all their own choice and they pay taxes like everyone else. Studies show smoking is in a decline and has been for a while, yet they still ban it. Where as you get Fat Bastards R Us who are disgustingly grossly over weight, with over a ¼ of children in todays British society being overweight with some 17% clinically obese, and who are going to cause the NHS more money in the coming years than smoking does now. How does the government feel its efforts would best be felt to tackle this growing (no pun intended) problem? That’s right, little traffic lights on food packaging to tell you if food is bad or not. Who the hell needs to be told Toffee Sticky Pudding is going to have in excess of 2,000 clalories (besides morons)? You don’t see them banning McDonalds in public places do you?
Not to mention the decline in Pubs and Restaurants, which like in Ireland will result in a lot of jobs losses and business’s closing. So no, I think they have made the wrong decision. |

i agree...theres always been non-smoking areas in lots of places...so why not now just ahve smoking areas...where those who do not like smoke do not have to go into.
if i still smoked i wouldnt go to the pubs that dont allow smoking and im a sure a lot of ppl wouldnt/dont. if ppl want to kill themselves smoking its their choice...ur so right. alcohol and food kill just as much, but nothin is done. |

1 out of every 5 packets of Fags in this country have not had any Duty paid on them. Ie smuggled. Its the decline in drinking and therefore the drop in sales in alcohol that will cause taxs to rise. HMCE bring in somwhere in the region of ÂŁ460-600 Million pounds worth of Renenue per month for the Excise Duty on Alcohol, making it the 3rd largest earner for the treasury. A 20% drop could have them looking to raise Revenue in other areas ie Direct / Stealth Taxation |

well it was funny really....i used to smoke on average say 5-10 a day....obviously more on a night out or in any social situation with other smokers...
last new years eve, had a lot to drink obviously, smoked a lot...then woke up the next day feelin rough (nothin new there) so i didnt fancy one that day cos i was rough...and all i did was think to myself..."i wonder how long i can make this last?"
i didnt make a fuss and tell everyone thast i was giving up...i just kept it to myself...and that was it really...never touched another since...now i dont even thnk about it, even when pissed! the only time i think about it is if i am sad or pissed off...or after a nice meal out somehwere....but the temptation is never strong enough.
i really enjoy the ability to fill my lungs with air...something i noticed a lot when i give up...i can take a much deeper breath, which shows u how much crap must have been in there before!
give it a go...dont make a big deal out of it.
worse thing to do apprently is to cut down...cos then those few ciggies u do have start to become important...more then before....if u say i wont have one til lunchtime, then that lunchtime ciggie becomes important, which is the last thing u want to make it. |

you are right about quitting at once ,cutting down will make it even worse cause most of it with smoking is physcological imo . as you said that one cigarette will be a big deal after the lunch ,dinner etc which will make your life even more stressfull as well .
i wont tell anyone either ,will just try myself ,cause when you tell others then you feel extra pressure and stress again which will make you die for a cigarette even more .
ferking stress everywhere ,damm. |

Smoking? It's easy to quit, I've done it manys a time.
Ha ha, Nevermind.
Consuming food is a personal thing, it doesn't harm anyone around you (if indeed anyone can fit around you), the same applies to alcohol.. but to a lesser extent.
Smoking however has implications for the public, i.e. the person standing next to you, walking behind or in the same room.
The government doesn't really mind smokers, as was mentioned above, they generate alot of money through taxes. The NHS doesn't really mind them either, as when they get sick (cancer or whatever) it is more often life threatening, and they don't last as long either.
Everyone is happy... from a financial point of view.
I think that the government (to add to its lust for power and control) wants to be seen to be promoting a healther public lifestyle, this is one way of doing that.
BTW Ireland seems to be viewed as one entity, it is not. There is no smoking ban in Northern Ireland, though I wish there was. |

i think alcohol causes lots of problems...just look at the streets of an busy town after kicking out time...full of drunks who would beat you to death without a care...vandals....cunts....knobs....not pleasant.
i like to get drunk but i know i am not a twat and kick ppls in. but loads of ppl just arent like that. |

a decline in smoking? Erm no more people smoke than don't. Unless its just scotlands liek that.
I am quite happy abotu the ban on smoking tbh but I would rather not have to then cover the taxes left by the decrease in smoking.
The scottish ban has been on telly up here for weeks now btw They reckon as early as january might herald the ban but depends on what you watch/listen to. |
