Rattling Tappets

Never noticed they were that noisey, sound ok inside the car but outside it sounds like a fiesta or something Very Happy

Is there anything you can easily do about it or is that just part of owning an 11yr old car?

Come to think about it did I hear rumors that Chris was going to to an article on this - if you need a 'donor' car for piccys you can do mine Wink

Maybe stay inside the car when the engine running? Turn the stereo up a bit? Very Happy

i had the same prob r19 1.4 are usally tappy anyway but if its never been done before then there may be a bit of play so if you have a haynes manual just follow that and you should be fine, but make shure that you leave the car stand overnight so you can ajust the valve clearances from cold.

hi red19rt,i got the same problem with my 1.8 SPI but i cant be bothered at all.i think these cars do it starting from cold and the noise goes down a bit as the heat increases.

Use the tappet reduction button. My Williams has one in the centre of the dash, right next to the balance / tuning button on the radio. Should say 'volume' on it. Just turn it as far clockwise as possible. Should make the problem go away straight away.

i dont know you king but already from what ive seen i think ur not going to get on very well with most ppl here if u waste our time and space with comments like that.

red...you should be able to just adjust the tappets if they are outside the nominal tolerance....haynes will guide u thru it...if it still taps after that then somethign else is causing it.

yeah, and tell me if its an easy job! for a fool with little mechanical skill like me! my little rt rattles like a snake, but am a bit intimidated by the idea of taking the rocker box cover off and fiddling with tappets (if that is indeed where they are, if not, ive just proved my ineptitude!) electrics and coolant flushes, i can do them, but that big block of metal in the middle scares me a tad...

i also have a funny feeling that they are just under the rocker cover si_rt . but my problem is that i cant get the rocker cover out due to one offending nut out of 8 and i found that out after taking the other 7 out . i was too excited to see whats under that rocker cover

Seriously, thanks for all the advice

have done the valve clearences before on my mini which was a piece of piss but I'm scared of doing anthing to the renault engine incase i damage something!

Maybe I'll throw caution to the wind sometime and borrow my mate's digicam and report back!

Its called humour. And was in fact ironic, but maybe you didnt understand. On the Williams noisy tappets are not a bad thing. They are just noisy. If they go when the engine is warm, they are no more than an annoyance. Hence although it is a rediculous suggestion to use the volume control of the radio to turn off the tappets, it was in fact ironic, as it will indeed work, because you wont be able to hear them.
