Hello
What sort of price would I be looking at for a clio 16v power steering pump. The bearing seems to have gone when under load on full lock. Am I correct in thinking that the pump is different to that on the 19 16v as it looks smaller and has a smaller drive wheel, probably the culprit as to why they get through them so quickly. Is this pump design fitted on any later clios, would it be worth it if they have small life expectancy? Cheers for any advice. |

yes the 19's is different and why do you say the bearings gone when under load?
its under load whenever the steerign wheels turned. If the bearign had gone it woudl leak all the time from the pump and in some cases the shaft comes out of the housing.
They don't have short life expectancies either.
Pump from renault is 200 quid. |

Was reading from a buyers guide that I had stored away. It highlighted the P,steering pump as a weak area on clio's. However If you think not then I am more willing to follow your advice. The pump is knocking on full lock, and actually jumping the belt. now I know why the old one belt was knackered. Am going to have a look tomorrow because when changing the belt it looked as though a pump securing bolt may have been missing. was thinking that this might be culprit. What do you think mate? |

they also rust a lot, have electrical fires every 2nd week and run off with your mrs.
Buyers guides unless written by people who know the car are worth nothing. What they do is talk to some factors etc. Go to a factor and he may say a lot of 12 year old escorts have needed new batteries last month, so that goes in the guide. The things are 12 years old!
Anyway...
The pumps are not highly stressed tbh the clios not heavy and it doesn't have a steep castor angle.
The pumps a simple centrifugal pump much like the water pump. Theres not much that goes wrong with them. Its the pinion on the rack where the hydraulic head is that dicates the load etc on the pump.
When the wheels straight ahead the pump just merrily pumps the pressure round the system, when the wheels turned its re-directed and ups the game.
If theres a mount bolt missing then the belts gonna slip due to deflection/twist.
If the resistance to the pumps high enough then the belts gonna jump if the pumps not 100% secure. So if theres a missing bolt then replace it and re-tension the belt.
If its still playing up then it may be the pump. But they normally lose fluid if they are dodgy. Either that or the impellar is shed and it doesn;t pump. |

Will changing the fluid make the steering a bit lighter too? |

Huw the fairy!
Fluid change can make it slightly lighter normally it makes less noise and feels smoother when you change the fluid. Not lighter as such, unless its low or really knackered. |

Had a proper look at it last night. Replaced missing bolt. However steering when on absolute lock is jumping the belt. It appears that when the steering wheel is held hard over left/right hand down that the power steering pump wheel slows up. The pump is slightly noisy also when under normal steering wheel movements. |

well all PS pumps make noise when you turn the wheels and will make a bit of a squeal when held on full lock which you shouldn't be doing anyway.
Your car your call, if you thik the pumps knakcered change it but it may not be any different.
the belt shouldn't be slack enough to jump on the pulley btw. |

The pump wheel just seems to stop turning as fast when the steering is worked over fastish. Originally it was making a loud knocking noise. Changed the belt as it looked knackered. When the belt came off it was totally eaten up, there were chunks out of it. It looks as though the pump wheel fails to rotate as fast and applies a braking effect. On full lock in particular this braking effect makes the belt twitch. Is not knocking now only because I have sprayed the belt with WD40. As soon as it dries it will again. The belt is correctly tensioned. |

the braking effect is due to it having to pump against pressure. So the engine slows down, it shouldn't jump etc. All engines drop maybe 50rpm when the steerings 1st turned. |

and if the ISCV works correctly it should up the revs to counter it |
