PC power unit

righty when the pc has been on for a while it cuts out.

Turn it off at the switch on the wall or the back of the pc for 20 mins it will go back on.

the power supply is hot to the touch when this all happens.

Also the power light actually stays on when it happens but everything shuts down.

I would say temp safety cut off.

This mean new power supply I assume?

Its pretty clean as it gets a good hoovering every month or so

Possible over heating. Open it up and check the CPU fan there usually set to shut down at 70+ degrees.

Or maybe your PSU is twatted dunno havn't meddled with PC's for a while now.

case is off it, always is now.

Liek I said the power supply is hot wqhen it shuts down. When it shuts down the fan stops right enough.

Grab the hoover and remove all the dust from mobo fan if you got one and cpu fan anf heatsink.

if you wanna check temps keep pressing DEL when you turn it on you will then get to BIOS then go to through the options (cause I can't remember what it's called) and you can watch the temp rise if it gets to hot then check the fans.

It will ask you to save when you exit just make sure you don't save as if you have changed soemthing then you may foul up your PC.

If you need a new PSU go for an Antec or something above say Â£40 because if you have some Â£10 piece of cack then it's more then likely gonna melt ya board.

I spent Â£60 on my Â£550watt thermaltake one. Never has my PC crashed or had an error since I installed XP pro last December Smile

CPU temp 43.5
Power unit temp N/A
CPU fan speed 3750rpm.

Was pretty constant over the 3/4 mins I watched it.

Theres no cables catching in the fans or there arnt any loose?

I am not sure then, wouldnt go buying a new PSU until you have asked for a pro opinion.

All the PCI/AGP cards in there proper? HDD s/ata lead in?

Random restarting could be anything to be honest, PSU and motherboard being the 2 main ones. As your feels warm i'd replace that first.

erm, sitting watching the BIOS is never going to make it overheat or even get to normal running temp as the CPU is totally idle.

You can get windows applicatons which will display that temp while the PC is running windows though.

Your an idiot. Everything in the PC is hot - where would he start?!?! Just because a component runs a little hot (and you would to with 240V and four voltage rails to provide for).

Sitting watching the temps will do nothing apart from confirm that your computer generates heat. You want to watch the voltage rails, 3.3V + - as well as 5V + - etc (you should find this in the bios) However for this to really work you need to be putting the computer under stress in order to assertain if the voltage is dropping below that which would cause instability, so ideally you want to be monitoring the voltages from Winodws while encoding DIVX or somethin.

Although one thing I will say is if you are getting core temps of 43.50 at idle that is a problem. I would be concerned if my AMD chip (any family, it doesn't matter they all run hot) ran at that temp under full utilization, let alone sat doing nothing!

Couldn't find a utillty on the ASUS site there is one for the USB2 and one for something else.

You might have something on the CD.

bear in mind george the pc had been on for abotu 4/5 hours by the time I checked it.

Anyway the power supply is now cool but the fan on the processor is makign funny noises and changign its speed sporadically. Maybe the problem is the processor fan

Which AMD is it?

I am assuming it's socket A so it's a thoroughbred or barton CPU.

They range from 2500xp+ for bartons and something crap for the TB's.

I was running a gigabyte mobo with a 3200 xp barton, 1024 ddr400, 6800gt and I used to get lots of errors so I switched to intel.
