There is a noticable improvement in the performance of my car when it's got a full or nearly-full tank of petrol, than when it's running low (between empty and a quarter full-ish). Um............WHY??
I used to think it when I first had the car, and so I used to run it quite full all the time, but then I kinda got bored and ran it 'normally' and hadn't thought about it since. But today I filled her up to the brim, and it's like a different car I tell thee. Makes not ONE bit of damn sense though! Any ideas?? |

Thats possible, earlier I was convinced my 16v's steering was wandering
Just a thought though, with a full tank there would be more weight in fuel so fuel pressure would be marginally higher, so if he had a slightly knackard fuel pump or manky fuel filter it might help?
Just a thought |

why would more fuel make higher fuel pressure? its not gravity fed you know. |

why would not the fuel amount make a diference if the pump is at the bottom of the tank ,more fuel = less air in tank thus pump pumping fuel but only fuel
i am standing to be corrected with sarcastic comments as always |

well if you let the tank run empty enough that the pump is sucking up air, of course you will be down on power.. ie it wont actually run at all. |

Yeah, I did think what huw said at first, more weight would be easier to pump, but like neal said, that would only be true if the pump was at the bottom of the tank and was gravity fed.....and it's completely the opposite. And I've been known to imagine a few things, but not this. Maybe my petrol guage is fucked and when it's down about a quarter full, the tanks actually nearly empty and so it's not running as well? But it's not as if I get fuel starvation problems like stuttering or hesitation etc. Just the car feels slower and as though it's killing itself getting there. But with full tank feels quicker, and is lovin it |

well it's at the top of the tank, is it not? So therefore the weight of fuel makes bugger all difference. Unless I'm driving upside down of course |

Well its a pointless discussion anyway, the fuel pump pressurises the fuel to 2.5bar, you think a miniscule difference of fuel pressure at the pick up is going make any difference to the pump output? |

the pump is right at the bottom fo the tank whewre else would be!
Ayway chances are you have a slightly porous braided hose between the pump and the pump holder. |

Well the pump is AT the top innit? But it extends to the bottom right? Much the same way that a drinking straw is kinda at the top of a drink, but sucks from the bottom? Oh I dunno. Think I'm just gonna get a new one anyway. Fed up of the noise mine makes, even if everyone does keep telling me it's okay.
