Dashboard Removal

Right I'm going to go for it. Next Month I'm doing the matrix, so I don't spend all winter driving in -10 degree temperatures iced to my leather seats.

But I first have to know how to get the dash off. Do you know where all the screws are to get it off?

P.S. I'm not taking off my steering wheel. Just doing a Schaks and moving it enough to get the matrix out.

P.P.S. It's a Ph2 if it makes a difference.

if you leave the wheel and column on then you WILL break the dash

Ahhh flipidy. I can get the surround off it's just the wheel is a air bag version so don't fancy that going off in my face.

you can leave the wheel on and drop the column. You'll still break crap not takign the dash off. Some say its quicker, and it is but you break shit and it squeacks like a fucker afterwards.

if you want it done right dash off.

I did mine just by shifting it forward and i didnt break anything.

Did you not take the wheel or column off? I will have to have a closer look me thinks.

the steerign column is attahced to the dash, the pin in the centre of th edash will break if its not taken off squarely.

You either removed everything or you did break stuff. Its IMPOSSIBLE to do it otherwise.

well i took all the shrouds off and pulled it away from the bulkhead square, then twisted it a bit to allow the heater box free.

I know the pin youre on about and i didnt break it

Airbagged wheel isnt hard to remove. Done it several times on my TD,

I shoved a box in the footwell under it, tied a bit of string up to the grab handle, whatever, does it matter? I did it without breaking anything, why do you have to try and prove I didn't?

Any ideas how to remove the airbagged wheel?? Do I need to disconnect battery or anything?

i have done it exactly the same way as neal did ,in fact i believe he was inspired from me Laughing

the steering wheel does not need touching at all when you get the dash nuts and a few screws (which you can feel by pulling the dash a bit) out ,the dash pulls out and slides on top of the steering column (you get the steering wheel surround out of course)
the gear stick surround needs to come of as well and after a few fiddles the matrix comes out with the whole mount Wink

Sweet as Schaks! Sounds quite simple. Dunno why I have put it off for so long really! Will have to get that matrix ordered and book my Dad for a day to help hold the dash Smile

Right, what I did was, disconnect battery for say 30 mins, undo the 2 torx screws on the back of the steering wheel, airbag should them lift out. Disconnect the connector on the back. Job done. Put it somewhere safe Wink

The Phase 2 Steering Wheels SRS unit has a self contained power source behind the wheel which is totally independant from the cars power supply so disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes won't do anything... throw the complete steering wheel and air bag at a wall very hard and you'll see what I mean.Oh, and don't be standing too close either cos it's likely to fly a fair distance when the bag goes pop!
