Does anyone know about these new MOT rules? Just took my Punto to get his tyre fixed as it was punctured and asked the chap about getting an MOT. The guy told me that they are now £48 (used to be £30) and no more free retests he said basically you can leave the car here to get fixed within 24hrs and not pay again but if you take the car away to jobs yourself you have to pay the £48 again to get retested! Is this bollocks or if it is true, do you reckon any places that will keep the old terms going?
He said it was to do with the new computerised ones and it now takes an hour
Plus - if my car is 'technically' MOT'ed til Feb and I haven't got the certificate (lost etc) do I have to have another one done just so I have the cert in my possession? If for talking sake I can't remember what garage it was done at so can't just get a replacement? Is it some sort of offence to not have a MOT cert even though it it technically MOT'd?
Cheers!

ye there is a long ansa i just foned my m8 lee up whos a mot tester and he said if it fails on anything mechanically then the car has to stay on site get repaired in 24hrs and the free re-test stays, if its simple like wipers or bulbs simple things then you can take it away and bring it back on the day. as for getting another mot he said go one of the previous owners or get it mot'd for a year

I don't know who the previous owner was until I get the V5 though. The Punto came from a salvage yard as a Cat C Stolen Recovered - nowt wrong with it apart from 4 slashed tyres and a snapped ingnition thingie where you ut the key in. Got it for £150
So you reckon just get it tested in my own right? I can't get it done at the moment because the damn horn isn't working and they check that don't they? |

Doesn't that mean I'm liable to be ripped off though? If it does fail on anything mechanical or needs welding or anything then they can charge me what they like if I take it away to be done then I'm liable for another £48 The garages talk to me like I'm some sort of muppet |

Last MOT I got done I was told that the rear discs and pads needed changing....so I told the guy where to go and pointed out that what he was saying was a load of bull. He turned round and started to answer back until I told him that I had done the rear pads discs and bearings the week before. He signed of the MOT pretty quick after that and surprisingly I never went back to that garage. |

Mines due on the 13 december so I will give you a shout when I'm going to get it done. Cheers
It was the garage at the bottom of Janes lane in Burgess Hill. Took my mums Rover in and he tried to fob me off on the brakes thingy. |

SHITE tax is end of this month thanks for reminding me!
Nick the greek has a dodgy reputation and rightfully so, I was silly enuf to take the discs down to get the bearings out, same bloke I was on about in my rant a few days ago. Why I ever went back is beyond me! |

I can't get my car MOT'd cos the horn aint working When I got the car it was a 'stolen recovered' and the ignition barrel was snapped off, the robbers had also broke the window washer stalk so the back window wiper was on permanently , I got new stalks (all one unit) and now my horn doesn't work. Just been out to the scrap yard and he said I need an auto electrician - more £££. Bollocks!
I need an MOT certificate so I can get a tax disc - I can only get a tax disc from the DVLA office itself because I have no V5 yet. Although the DVLA computer says my car is taxed and tested til Feb. I am at the moment "not displaying a valid tax disc" - whats the penalty for that then?

ha they'd have to catch me first Anyway, what's the chances of being stopped? The DVLA woman on the phone said the car is currently taxed til Feb, I just don't have the disc. So it's not as if it has *no* tax - is it? The salvage yard cashed the disc in in August, surley it don't take this long to update DVLA records?
I rang again today to see if it needed a VIC check and the guy said no, once I have my insurance cover note and MOT cert I can go and get a tax disc from their office straight away. 30 miles away too |
