cos the conical flare always catches so its wrong.

surprised the flange is welded, usually theres a ring round it and its loose on those types of de-cats.

Also its silenced which is good for a tenner.

Anyway if the flare doesn't go in the D/P you'll need to dress it, I usually just bounce the grinder off them a couple of times.

I prefer the sort where its welded at the engine of the pipe of the flanges you bolt to the D/p then clamp the pipe over it.

it isnt welded, the 2 hole flange (dp end) is loose on the pipe

my de cat is a bit a tube with two flanges on it, welded on the outside to the tube, dont look owt like that front bit.
also i dont know what the deal is with it being silence or not silenced i didnt notice any more noise as the cat its self anit a silencer.
gonna make one up for the mrs clio this week n that will be the same as the one on mine bit of stainless tube with two flanges welded up on it nocked up at work (in stainless steel) and welded up in work so im getting paid to make it so its better than it being free its actually paying me to make its self. weird.

possibly an inlet manifold, bodged from a standard one, so aluminium...so TIG would be necessary

Alex you got any tips for me mate. Got an arc welder, got the thing working at last. I'm trying to build weld up on a broken off caliper bleed nipple then I can weld a nut to it.

Problem is I can't get the weld down. After ages arsing around I built the weld up maybe 1mm.

Now if it was a mig it'd be piss easy, point pull trigger done but it's not a mig and I cannae afford one. Any tips would be helpfull.

If no one else is wanting that de-cat I might have.

Neal use mild steel for an inlet manifold. I have plans somewhere for an inlet, never got round to doing anything with it but it involves narrowing everything up inc the head ports.

to do the ally id have to take it to work, but id only be able to do it in my brew times etc, could knock one out in mild steel in a few nites work depending on how complicated it is, youd be able to nock out a flange of a inlet mainfold gasket and get a place with a profile burner or laser to knock on off, the rest would be to your size and design.

Chris what size electroed are you using?
Are they definatly for mild steel if that is what the nipples made out of,
Make sure there aint no dirt or grime on the thing your welding and if its plated with somthing grind it down to the fresh metal,
Make sure once you have welded that you remove all the shite slag from on top of the weld otherwise you'll never arc up in that place and the slag will go inside the weld making it week, remove it with a chissel and grind it back 1/2mm if its in the weld.
As i dont know what welder you've got or the best settings on it i can only really say use up one or two rods on a bit of scrap metal to get the hang of it the differant power it can put down with thick and thinner rods.
Make sure your rods arent full of water by leaveing them i the warm oven for a while before you weld with em cos they are pourous and you weld will be like a areo bar on the inside and week as fook if you dont,
Make sure you touching in metal to metal with it somtimes the metal rod can burn quick than the flux coating on it so you wont be able to arc up,
If its only a chep set make sure you - ans + leads are as short as posible from the work peice to the plant,
Oh, and stick welding's a arse in general. unless your good at it and really its only any good for thick plate stuff.

i de-catted the clio yesterday....took a different approach tho! it involved a MIG welder, angle grinder and some mild steel tube. i cut the flange off the centre section and the downpipe flange off an old cat, then welded in the tube (cut to right length), then welded the flange on the end. its spot on!!

Its SIP general purpose electrode pack, unsing a 1.6 mm rod.

The caliper was cleaned right back to bare metal. I had the current up to high at first and the stick would just weld solid to the caliper, when I turned it down it seemed to arc sparodically.

I can lay a weld down on the cast caliper body okish but I can't get the stick to just melt in a puddle.

I chip off the slag etc but theres not much. Its also cleaned every attempt with a wire brush.

its just not working for me.

If it was a mig it'd have been done in abotu 2 secs but never used a stick welder. I also know the arcs better for thick metal but I'm trying to stick a big nut to a biggish bleed nipple so it should work!

Electrodes say excellent for mild steel which is what the nipples made from, steel that is.

Sticks are dry to mate, been in the house in a dry room (living room) but I will stick em in the oven for a wee while next time.

It just seem I can get it to arc but then it stops or the rod just sticks to the nipple.

Stan thats the best way I used to do that myself. I even have a decat front flange in the shed, but I can't get hold of tubing in sensible lengths anywhere. And 6metres of piping is all very nice but I can't transport it, nowhere to store it and I am beyond chopping up pipes in a car park to fit in a car!

I wouldn't mind buying 6m lengths if I could make up flanges easily enough.

i know wot (I mean what really) u mean about buying full lengths! at home (Carlisle) we'd just see the foreman, tell him wot (I mean what really) we wanted (usually only a metre of wotever....offcuts really), he'd cut it and we'd bung him a couple of squid for the coffee machine...sorted! tried it in Swansea....no fuckin chance! "minimum purchase is £25 sir"! in the end i found a little wrought iron workshop and asked the gaffer there if i could buy some of his stock! not a bad deal really.....

I need to look around then, tbh this whole laziness I have procured is amazing, I should really be studied for it. I make other people go to the fridge for me etc! lol

I just need a foot or so and i'll be sorted.

i tried to get a suitable section of old exhaust but it never worked.

i can get hold of just about any metal size and shape, manily ally, m/s and stainless steel as we make tankers for the dairy industry big stainless tanks, i can get enough to do one or two de-cats a month (without paying) easy, if i were to buy it (2" tube) in mild steel it wouldnt be more than 15quid +vat and stainless 304grade (for exhausts) i doubt it would be over 25quid for a 6m length and the cut it up into 450mm long sections for renault de cat pipes anyway, i would say the hard bit is nocking up the flanges, getting the hole just big enough for the pipe to go in to make a seamless joint,
ill post some pics when the one im making is finished, mine will be out of 316 grade, the same as your knifes and forks!!!!
and chris the trick to arc weldin is to keep the electode about 3/5mm away from your work peice once you have arced up,
holde it at about a 45/50o (degrees) to the workpeice.
and if you have a proper face shield, ie not one of them ones you hold in front of your face, on you put on your head,
you can work the torch better, and hold it more stable. try just touching the work peice and let it arc up for a second and then pull back and build up a load of tacks on eack side of the nut.

stan where abouts in carlise are you from? cos i lived in carlisle for a fair while and moved down to preston about 3years ago. where did you work etc?

cheers
alex.

thats the price I was quoted for 304 25 quid for 6m. 2.25inch dia is what they had though.

yes thats what I was sying the flanges are the hard bit.

Anyway yes its a crap visor you hold, I was cursing it somewhat.

When the weathers better I'll give it another go.
