here's another way just copy dialogys folder off CD 1 and 2 into program files click yes to all when it starts moaning about copying over files and you need quicktime pro and go to custom install and make sure quicktime for java is selected.

Yeh its bloody quicktime that is causing huwwatkins problems as well as seemingly everyone elses - if installing the newest version of Qucktime works, then that will be the easy fix. Just have to make sure that you either do a full install, or do a custom install and make sure you select the "Quicktime for Java" option from the list of installable bits. If you have a slow internet connection, you can just download the version from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ which will only make you download the bits you actually need rather than everything (like the standalone version does).

However, on the off chance that this doesn't always work...

The problem appears to be down to Quicktime being a muppet and not always installing its Java file to the right location. The file in question is called "QTJava.zip". If you do a search of your computers hard disk drives for that file and it doesn't exist, it means quicktimes installer is not installing Java support. In this case, make sure you do a full install of quicktime, or a custom install as described above, and see if dialogys runs afterwards.

If you do find a file with that name on your computer somewhere, and dialogies is giving you the small-window-in-the-corner-that-is-blank-white-when-maximised, then the chances are that that file is in the wrong place.

If you do a search for a file called "rt.jar", you should usually only have one copy of it on your computer (unless you have lots of different versions of Java installed). If you find this file, note down the folder its in/the pathname eg. for my system, this file is at:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib

but this will most likely be different in some way on individual systems. The key thing is that the path should end with the \lib bit, otherwise something wierder is going on.

So now you have to go to this folder, easiest way is to use my computer or windows explorer depending on what you call it. Once you have opened the folder that has the rt.jar file in it, you should see a bunch of other files with .jar at the end, and also a bunch of subfolders.

One of these subfolders is called "ext". Open this subfolder. This is the place you want to have the QTJava.zip file. So now use cut and paste or whatever to move the QTJava.zip file from wherever it is to this folder.

With a bit of luck, when you start dialogys, it might actually work Smile If it doesn't, well then you have to start arsing about with environment settings, which is relatively easy in WinXP but I can't remember how you do it on older windows versions.

I'd be interested to hear what peoples experiences are with these solutions - obviously if installing a newer/better version of quicktime than the one on the dialogys cds works, then that is easily the best way of fixing the problems, so I would recommend everyone try that first like the_chunkster suggested.

Cheers

my link is the standalone one that only downloads the player and not all the rest of the crap...like itunes...

all i can say is after using that one, installed custom with all options, it worked....no messing with anything...just cd1 then 2 and 2 again. as per the original instructions.

You need to start over.

Uninstall dialogy, uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader, uninstall Quicktime Player and Java Runtime Player.
also delete the directorys they were in.

The software relys heavily on the versions included with the cd.

Insert the CD marked Setup/educational.
It should autorun, when its loaded just quit out of it unless of course u want to look thru the tutorials on it.

Goto My Computer, then RIGHT click on the cd drive the cd is in, and use the EXPLORE option.
Click on the ENGLISH folder then go into the installers folder.
in there are 3 more folders which contain the version of adobe, quicktime and java 2 runtime player the software needs.
Install of these from the setup.exe's.
When doing QUICKTIME, chose the custom set up option and check all the boxes.

Ok now when you have done these remove the setup/educational cd and put in data disc 1, run the program on it called INSTALLPC.
follow the prompts.
Repeat the same with Data Disc 2.
once completed do a reboot of your pc.
On the desktop should now be an icon called DIALOGSYS MPF.
This runs the software HOWEVER this does not always work due to conflicts with other software.
To run, go to My Computer / C (local disc) / program files / dialogsys.
double click dialogsys.bat. (if you do not see the extension .bat then you need to show file extensions, to do this click on TOOLS at the top of the folder you are in, then folder options, this opens a new window, click the VIEW tab and u should see various options, scroll down until you see
HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES - untick the box, click APPLY and then click OK)
This should open a dos box on your desktop and then it runs the software.

During installation make sure you dont have any other programs running such as internet explorer, winamp, outlook etc.

done what wicked neo axactly said today

uninstalled everything today and started with the cd where it has the quick time ,java and adobe in it . downloaded those 3 progs .

and installed the 1st cd of dialogys once thats finished the "dialogys mpf " icon comes up on the desktop and installed the 2nd cd then ,finished and took the cd out clicked on the icon ,the minimised window appears on left top of the screen and its blank . went into program files done what is needed to see the bat file ,yes it did come up .clicked on it , a black screen comes up with what huwwatkins said comes up on his pc . so there is no joy .

JONNYBOY, did you install the newer version of quicktime while the dialogys and all the rest of the programs from the cd were installed on the pc or did you have to uninstall and start over again ?
