that hatch thing was kindly cut in the boot floor by a previous owner schakal, needs welded up.

The right way to do it is to drop the tank which is the way I do the job.
The quick, dodgy garage way is to cut holes in your car leaving a mess like that.

not sure if we are on about the same thing chris but will take a picture of that lid under the rear seat while the car is stripped ,it looked like made by renault to me

is the fuel pump hard to get out? any chance of a tech sticky on it? also do yu have to have an internal one if you swap it (clio) as i'll need to uprate mine once i change the lump so if i can use an external one instead it should be better to change if it packs up for any reason

I'm trying to remember why it was wrong.....um....

right, found the email I sent to GSF after what the garage told me....

"......My car was in the garage today to have the fuel pump fitted and they phoned me to tell me it is the wrong one for my car. They told me that the unit on my car at the moment has got a seperate pump and sender unit, wheras the one I ordered from you is an all-in-one unit, and therefore it's a different setup. Do you have the correct pump for my car? It will be the pump on it's own with no sender unit on."

and they replied withhh.....

"HI Mr Williams
sorry for the delay , but having investigated it we don't actually stock the part you want it would be main dealer only . but i will arrange a collection for the wrong part and credit the amount and the carriage back to your credit card.
once again my apologies for the inconvinience this has caused"

So I am still confused. I could just buy the same pump again but go to a different garage lol. It cost me £124.49 when I got it. Dunno if that's good or bad.

It sounds like the garage are retards, like I said when I saw the pic thats the right pump. I still can't see the other pic though with the numbers but if chet says its right then thats good enough.

To fit the pump on the clio/19 you HAVE to drop the fuel tank or cut a hole in the floor.

The rubber round grommet only allows access to the sender unit.

Hmmm well I might buy the same pump again but go to a different garage then! Or still worth getting a better one? Would a higher flow one actually be any better? Cuz surely I would also need an ECU telling it to flow more? Confused

ECU has nothing to do with the fuel pumps output. The ECU only controls the injector pulse width which determines the fuel injected.

Higher flow pump is cheaper which is the main benefit, really, might get a bit more poke when the fueligj is open loop i.e. under hard accelereation.

Normal closed loop running you won't get a difference unless the existing pumps knackered, which is why I assume your changing it.

no liek I said thats for the fuel tank sender, thats what tells the gauge where to sit, or in the 16V's case the digi dash.

The fuel pump looking at that pips about 4 inches to the left of the rubber thing, instead of dropping the tank people cut the boot floor to get access to it.

Yeah my pump at the mo is knackered. To cut a long story short.......I used to have a leak in my fuel tank........when I got that fixed I noticed that my fuel system was like a big vacuum and eventually found that some kinda valve near my fuel cap was jammed.....so no air could escape? So whenever I used to open my fuel cap I'd get LOTS of hissing air, and one day, I got showered in petrol when I took the cap off lol.......that's about when I decided there was something wrong! Could hear the tank denting in on itself if I went for long journeys, like sucking the air out of a drinks carton y'know. So my pump that's in there now would of had to work SO hard I can imagine, to pump fuel in a vacuum?........and now it sounds like it's in pain and nearly dead or something. Sure it's knackered like.

yeah the brown valve thingy. The breather pipes sound like they are blocked though mate, have you cleared them?

Charcoal canister might also have problems.

Haven't tried cleaning them no. Breather pipes.......so just air in them? Won't have to cover meself in petrol or anything? Easy to do? I am pretty thick incase you haven't already worked that out Very Happy lol. Well, am not too bad! But yeah, like when I fill up at a garage, if I have my hand all the way down on the trigger of the petrol pump, it keeps stopping, as if the fuel can't go in fast enough y'know. I have to fill it slowly. So does sound like something's blocked. Wouldn't it being blocked for so long have knackered my pump tho from over-working it? Ah well who knows, but no point getting a new pump if the same's gonna happen again, need to sort it first don't I

I know, its hard but someones gotta do it

righty filler neck and breather pipes off the car

Image

this shots obvious, the brown push button valve and the hole on the rights some sort of venty thing which I am not 100% sure of what it does

Image

this is the back of the brown valve bit. The thinner breather pipe from the tank goes to 1 side of this, the other end goes comes out of the stub in the picture. This stub connects to the charcoal canister which is at the front of the car in front of the drivers wheel behind the liner

Image

Another pic showing where the fatter breather just goes back into the filler neck.

Image

Righty you access the tank end of the bretaher poipes under the cover in the boot, take the cover off then remove the pipes, make sure the tanks not filled to the brim btw! The fat one should blow through easily, stick your pinky in the senders stub to make sure its empty.

the smaller pipe, you should be able to blow through this when the fual tank cap is on, when its off you can't. If you can't blow through it even with the cap on then you have a blockage. You need to find this blockage, under the car you will see where the pipes go, the smaller one isn';t jubilee clipped at the base of the filler neck, pull it off, watch for any fuel that may dribble out. Blow through the pipe again, it should be free from obstruction. If not then the pipes got something in it, how you get it out is up to you!

If the pipes free then you need to look at the valve itself, pull off the small hose to the charcoal canister and try blowing through again, if its fine then the pipe to the charcoal canister is blocked. if you can't blow through it then the valves dodgy. I soak them in wd-40 and use needle nose pliers to persuade them in and out, usually sorts them out.
