Hehe, at least people can tell me to go fuck myself now and mean it!
But I know what you mean about 19/Clio though, 19 has more of a masculine look about it, probably because you expect to see young women in Clio's, hell I know three women that have Clio's but know of no women that drive 19's (bar Lynsey on here!) |

clio is a lot smaller than the 19.
Clio is also a good bit slower than the 19 in outright accel and speed and a hell of a lot slower point to point in Bens clio as its nearly undriveable with the suspension and wheels that are to big.
The insurance also reflects this fact.
19 is the cheaper car even if you need to insure it.
A grand for a clio, another grand for insurance.
£250 for a 19, £1400 for insurance, still cheaper overall and even if the 2nd year doesn;t come down much its gonna be evens. |

i never buy a car for thinking how much the insurance will cost me now and in the next few centuries ,you like a car and you buy it no matter how much fuel it burns or what ever it costs ,right ? |

My point always is for a car with no MOT its only worth the sum of its parts - 40%. I'd much prefer to have a car with a rust free dint free shell and dodgy mechanics which I can fix myself then rusty arches which can only really be done professionaly to get it 100%. Ask yourself, why has the seller not renewed the MOT? Surly £35 spent would add £200 to the cars value with 12months ticket, there must be a reason for not doing so.
By the time that Clio is done (maybe if anyone else other then Chris H doing it, I can't comment on the arrangement you have) paid for parts, a bit towards labour and paid out for MOT/Tax etc I recon you'll be looking at the same money you could have paid for a roadworth decent one that you could be driving now.
As for Renault 19's....
I know where there is a N reg Green 3dr R19 16v Exec, Leather etc - N reg, 78,000 been garaged for 6 months S/S exhaust. MOT has run out. The guy is looking for £500, I'm sure with cash he could come down a bit more.
There is a black R19 16v exec on ebay with 61,000 in Manchester that hasn't moved out of a garage for 5 years, e-mailed the guy he wants £500 - I recon £400 cash would seal the deal and it just be a case of renewing it, replacing tyres etc.
Those two are quite expensive but £300 should easily get you one with MOT if you wait around, there was a PH1 16v on Autotrader in Leeds for £300 with 6mts MOT/Tax needed 4 tyres.
Look at Neal - £280 for a Chamade with MOT, I picked up my Chamade for £250 with MOT, Huw got his Chamade for £500 with 12mts MOT new brakes and tyres, Liam got a Chamade for £350 with a new HG, Cambelt etc.
R19 all the way. |

Addie makes the point perfectly, all about sitting back and having patience and to some extent knowing where to look! I would not by a car without an MOT unless it was extremly cheap 1-200 quid tops, you just dont know what your getting, and if they havn't MOT'd it there must be a reason, airing on the side of suspition is always a good thing.
Ok I'll grant you MOT's aren't everything...just look at my TD, but at least it affords you some guarantee, and that you wont have to worry about structural repairs for 12 months(in most cases!)
schakal: It would be nice if we could all buy cars without having to worry how much insurance will cost! |

theres a black m plate 16v hatch dunno if its an exec alan is still tryin to decided whether to get it or not for £150
needs a headgasket.
the arch corrosion on the clio isn't a failure. juyst fecking scabby!
all it needs for the mot is to block any white light from the rear fog light, new rack gaiter on the nearside, steering column sorted and new wipers. |

I'm surprised it wasn't cheaper then £480 Chris - being scotland and all
It sold on ebay for £350 which was a more reasonable fair price - how did the deal at £480 come around? |

just cos a car hasnt got mot doesnt mean its suspect. could just mean the person wants to get rid BECAUSE it ran out of mot and doesnt want to bother putting any more money into it.
difficulty is between ppl who want to buy it and run it straight away and those who buy it with a view to fixing whatever it can throw at them. |

The original eBay seller bought a much newer and faster car (Seat Leon?) and thus couldn't be bothered to re-MOT the Clio.
Granted it's needing a few parts and one thing you're all forgetting is that once this Clio is tip-top it'll appreciate a lot more in value than an equivalent 19.
Like I said, it's surprisingly hard to find a Clio for under a £1K. Also, the receipt that the guy got shows he paid £430 for it, NOT £350 (don't know why) and he then spent £75 on parts, so I actually gipped him a bit.
I'm happy with it anyway. Performance-wise it's a massive improvement over the 19. |

R5 turbo, clio 16V is a superior machine.
R11 turbo better than thr 5 but the 19's better
21 turbo, better than the laguna but handling isn't as good. |

back to the original question, "valver" just seams to be a general term used for 16v engines; not just renaults. eg "nova with a valver lump"
as for the clio.V.19 argument: wot (I mean what really) can i say, i like to wear pink! |
