I wondered about the belt myself but It's not really that sort of screech and I didn't think it would necessarily screech at the times I mentioned (pulling off sharply etc). If it was a belt where could I tighten it up?

Yeah I've got a haynes. I'll have a look and see. I just want to know what is causing it because it was suggested on another forum that it was down to the clutch release bearing but it seems as though that might not be the case going by what has been said here.

What's everyone elses opinion.

anybody else have an idea? I had another listen for the noise tonight and it certainly doesn't sound like a belt slipping

well from what I read on the thread so far none of you has a clue anyway so theres no point!

I'd say the release bearing though.

Check your engine mounts, they're prone to causing a noise if worn/not tight.

Dragging this one back up again. I think I'm going to have a go at this in a couple of weeks but just a couple of questions:

I know that I would have to support the engine with a jack when doing it which wouldn't be a problem but what about the gearbox when moved to the side - should I support that from a hoist of some sort or what is the best way to do it?

Is it a job that can be done with just me doing it or would I need someone else at anypoint - i.e. for when I'm moving the gearbox to the side so that it's weight isn't damaging anything between it and the engine.

Thanks.

Yeah I know about the wood - but best reminding me or I'll end up doing something stupid, LOL. Is it just a plank of wood along the botom of the sump?

What abot supporting te gearbox etc?

Thaks.

gearbox is light enough, and afaik it wont just fall through the subframe! just make sure its covering as much of the sump as possible, to spread the area of the weight.

Thanks mate. I hadn't had time to check if it could just sit on the subfram but that makes life a lot easier as I don't want to have to piss about supporting the box too much etc. When removing the box is it easy enough to stop its weight hanging on the input shaft (I think thats what it's calles - the shaft from the gearbox to the clutch)?

Sorry about all the questions but just want to check as much as possible before having a go and buggering the whole thing up. Atill have to clear out the garage though Sad

Any other suggestions for doing the job?

you wont be able to get the release bearing off then! you will have to remove the passenger driveshaft. i assume your doing the clutch aswell, make sure its all aligned before trying to put the box on, it will be very frustrating trying to get it all in and it wont go.

I was taking what I said about the input shaft from my haynes - I know the gearbox will have to be removed completely from the shaft to get to the release bearing but I mean when you are removing the gearbox from the shaft is it fairly easy to support the gearbox so that it's weight is not hanging on the shaft.

To sum it up my -plan is to remove the gearbox and just slide it off to the side so that I can replace the release bearing and then put the whole lot back together again. I'm not really planning on doing the clutch TBH but I might consider it. Could you give me a list of everything that needs to be taken off or released in order to remove the gearbox. To my knowledge the following need removed:

- Both driveshafts
- Gear linkage
- Doggy mount and side gearbox mount
- Battery
- Bonnet

Is that everthing that will need to be removed to free up the gearbox to be removed?

As I have said I am just teaching myself as I go along and any help from you more experienced guys is really a huge help and much appreciated.

Thanks.

yeap sounds about right, im not sure on these clios, but on the valver and the 172 it has a mount under the battery. to get passenger shaft out, you may ind it easier to undo both thwe strut and the bottom balljoint, so its free to move.

I've got to fit new springs on the front as well so I may just remove the hub, driveshaft and the strut from the passenger side when I am doing it. I'm not too fussed it fi take me a while to get it all done as I can manage without the car for a wee while but I just want to check that everything is within my capabilities lol.

As for the mount under the battery - that's what I mean by the side gearbox mount. I'll have a proper looka roudn the engine bay tomorrow and figure out whats what. It'll be a couple of weeks before I try it anyway though as I have exams coming up at uni unfortunately.

having thought about it if I am going to do the release bearing I may as well do the clutch as well for all it will cost. Would I have to totally remove the gearbox to replace the clutch?

Is the clutch a relatively straightforward job to do?

easy. i think its 8 bolts around the diaphragm plate, it'll be located on dowels, prise it off, new one on, the pressure plate, or clutch plate, will need to be bang on centre, otherwise the box wont go on.

OK I think I know most of what needs done apart from 2 things:

1) Does the gearbox need to be removed from the engine bay to replace the clutch or is there enough room there to change it as I had a look today and there doesn't look to be much room to move is across towards the passenger side wheels arch.

2) How is the best way to support the gearbox when removing it so that it doesn't damage the input shaft?

Sorry about all the questions but just want to straighten everything out in my head before I start the job.

Thanks.

afaik you undo the subframe on the pass side and it allows you to pull the box out enough, as i said just then only pull it off enough to do the clutch.

and just pull it off as evenly as possible, use a rubber mallet to tap each side as its more than likely to be rather sticky.
