If you wanted then that would be fine - but I'm not collecting the car till about 7 at night because I'm working tomorrow all day and the guy won't be home till about 7. How are you planning on getting the other clio back?

lol, if you are coming through it would be good if you could take the box as well as it would save me coming to collect it. I've texted the guy to make sure he would be fine if you were to take the clio rather than me - from what he said before I can't see any problem but I would want to make sure.

I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from him.

I just wanted to do it this way as I guessed you would want to get the V5 etc in your name for the time being so he would have to know it was you taking it?
Unfortunately I couldn't do during the day as I'm working and can't change my hours.

I just got a text back from the guy this second and it reads:

"Its there for the takin. I would prefer he didn't pick it up 2moro though as still have to take my brothers stuff out it.you can let me know 2moro.Al"

From that it looks as though it wouldn't be best for you to pick it up tomorrow. It's up to you - you could have a look tomorrow if you want or I could arrange for you just to go and pick it up some other time?
or I could see if I can get him to change his mind about taking it tomorrow?

No problem mate. I'll have a quick rumage and find out about mileage, mot, bodywork etc. Anything in particular you want me to check? He says he doubts it'll start just now as the battery is probably dead having been sitting there so long, but I'll try anyway. I don't think I've got any jump leads either, but I'll have a look in the garage to see if I can find any.

I'll try and do that. I don't think anything will have been removed from it TBH. The car, from what I can gather, was parked up there about 10 months ago and quite literally hasn't been touched since.

I got the car home earlier. My dad ended up driving it home as I didn't want to risk driving with no insurance incase I got pulled over or anything. We just took the car by the bypass as it drove OK-ish in 4th gear.

When I got home I opened up the bonnet and there was a stink of gearbox oil - which might explain a thing or two.

As for the other clio, it has not tax or MOT as you might guess. The guy couldn't even find the key though so I couldn't get the bonnet open or get inside. I also found out it's actually a 1.2 RN but it has the same front bumper as a 1.4 RT has. The car is a 5 door L-reg on 88000 miles. The car has a couple of wee dents on the fron of the bonnet and the rear arches are quite rusty. It comes with all four wheels still there - but I couldn't tell about the brakes as to whether or not they were OK. It turns out the £400 was money needing spent on it to get it through the MOT, but neither he nor his brother has any idea what work was actually needed. I took a load of photos - but something has fcuked up on the camera and at the moment only 1 of them is viewable, I'll try and sort it if I can and post them up later. Sorry about the lack of info on it - but without the key there wasn't too much I could do.

cheers for that mate.

In all honesty would you take it?

How bad are the arches? Are they holed?

is the rust bad? what did it feel like? You get a feeling about cars as you know.

The 16V box casing has probably split.

The rust on the arches is fairly bad TBH - it's spread a bout and inch up from the arch all the way round. As for whether or not to go for it - it's dificult to say without having been able to have a proper look. The one thing I (very stupidly) forgot to look at was the sills, but I would guess that with the arches being as they are the sill will probably be quite bad - which could account for some of the work it would need done to get an MOT. Overall it sounds as though the car was a good runner and really the milage isn't stupidly high or anything, but rust on the arches and sills could be a problem. I'll try and get those pics up for you tomorrow if I can sort them as I just don't have time today to try and sort the camera (exam tommorow.)

Also, on the subject of my 16v I've notced theres a bit of play in the steering - about an inch either way without any resistance which I'm guessing is the common problem with the Clio steering rack. Is the only option really to weld it - or am I right in thinking there is something you can do with spacers? I think one of my brothers mates is a welder so I might see if he would be able to do it cheap.

Does shimming it work just as well - or does it only really work as a short term measure? Just asking as I could do that myself but I can't weld it myself.

As I say I'll try and get the pics asap. The guy said he's happy enough to hold onto the Clio for another couple of weeks, but if he hasn't heard from me by then he's just going to arrange for it to go to the scrappy. I think one way of looking at it is that if you took it with you it would cost nothing and would probably at least run with a different battery etc. If you got it home and decided it was a pile of shite you could just scrap it, or scavange some part (if any are usefull) and then scrap it.

yes shimming is fine. The thing is you need to get them in so they don't move, heat and the freezer helps and a bit of brute force.

Yeah I was thinking that as well matey, I'll need to see it.

Ask him when he finds th ekeys and clears it out.
