okey i know its not a renault but we bought this car (g reg 1,1 fiesta ) for my friend today everything under the bonnet looks real tidy but while the car is idling i can feel the revs going up and down .i was thinking that could be to do with the carb for a start .and iwill clean it with carb cleaning spray.

any extra information on these cars running system would be a bonus for me even though i know the system consists of a carb and a crappy engine .
so i am planning to change the plugs ,oil ,the air filter (which i believe is quite dirty )

the brake fluid level is about 2cms higher than the max dont know if its okey to run it that way ???????

so any other suggestions ,ideas would be great and much appreciated

cheers

Ahh the good old HCS fordies.

Brake fluid level, maybe it has recently had brake work and the new components shoved the fluid back up. Or it may have absorbed water and filled up that way. When it next rains or even if you hose down the car see if the level goes up, it may only happen if the cars parked a certain way. Anyway its not good if its water ingress. If it is the system needs flushed through and filled with new fluid. If its just been topped up to much take some out.

You need to find out what carbs fitted some have twin choke webers fitted, or the ford VV or a single choke weber.

Check and adjust the valve clearences as they are always out, these cause a racket and an unstable idle.

If that makes no diff then its time to check for air leaks.

the brakes seem to be stopping the car where the brake pedal hits the floor ,if you know what i mean chris. feels like there is some air somewhere .
the car is a twin choke i believe as there is a spare one in the boot .with 2 holes (which i believe are the chokes) one of the holes have the butterfly thingy on the other one has not. i will have a better look later .
what do you mean with "'check for the air leaks '' ? do you mean the air leaks from the carb.?????
i heard these cars have timing chains instead of a belt ,is that true .how often do they need changing ?
cheers chris

yep spound sliek air, get it bled. Also there may be buggered rear wheel ctyylinders thats why its been topped up, you may find the resovoir has emptied itself after 50 presses or something.

Yes 2 holes mean its twin choke, both holes have throttle plates, only one however has a butterfly at the top, thats the choke flap.

air leaks aroudn the carb base and the inlet manifold gasket, its not uncommon and the HCS's had a recall for a new gasket.

yes is has a timing chain, doesn;t need replaced as long as the oil changes have been kept up and it doesn't rattle liek a tin of nails.
