the williams clio box is a JC5, am i right in saying that standard 19 16v driveshafts fit it with no problems?
how about the clio 172? thats a JC5 variant as well. |

they all have the same casing and ratio's, except the 16v's had quicker 1st n 2nd, the williams was proberbly the same just with beefyier bearings, and the driveshafts will fit. all the running gear(driveshafts) + wishbones on the willy were the same as thew 19 to widen the track for better road handleing from the clio 16v. |

the jc5 has different casting to regular JB boxes. much stronger casing and bearings inside. the williams box is the only one that will work on a the speedo cabled 19. the other jc5's r all electrical speedo connection.

JC5's are the same casing and theres plenty that run the mechanical speedo like the 19. TD 19, lagunas etc etc
Yes the 172 lump uses a JC5 varient.
Theres a few lags down in a new scrappy I found, nothing special but theres a few JC5 equiped ones.
Why the JC5 doesn't spit out the circlip I don't know, same setup but the diff must have a deeper recess for the circlip. Never had to change one so never looked closely. Its got beefier synchros though. |

so would a clio 172 JC5 box fit the standard 19 16v drivshafts but just not be able to get a working speedo?
The F4R engine paired with a williams JC5 would fit straight in then |

the jc5 has got a different casing to the JB series, i got a jc5 in my megane.
the only jc5 thatl work with the ally sumped F7P is the one from a williams. all the the other boxes have a tin sumped bell housing or a digi speedo

maybe, they have a seperate cagy thing on some of them on the drivers side. Makes it like a vauxhall. Passenger side is fine depends on the 172 box.
Anyway like I said a laguna or 19 TD JC5 will do the same job and allow a straight speedo plug in.
If you mention 172 or williams even though they are the same the price will probably at least double over a 19 diesel box matey. |

you reckon? I am on the lookout for a buggered diesel box so I can whip its 5th gear out. 3500rpm at 70 in 5th is a bit cack, with a laguna its just under 3krpm in 5th so a diesel will be less I'm sure.
Anyway if you sort the engine out properly then you can get plenty of low end wallop from it. |

ok from my research so far i have found that the 1.8 16v (F4P) and 2.0 16v (F4R) lagunas both use a JC5 box, want to find out ratios for the 172 box now |

the laguna uses the volvo n series engines in 16v format, therefore they run different bell housings to regular f type lumps. the starter motor is mounted on the front of the block on the n series. i went thru all this hassle earlier in the year trying to find a compatible jc5 box for my 19.

im not after one for the F7P though
hypothetically im after one to fit the F4R clio engine that will mate with the 19 16v driveshafts if the clio box wont. Having a working speedo would be a bonus though i must admit |

the f4r engine runs the same sump and stud pattern as the ally sumped f7 engines. so its gunna be a williams box, or another jc5 box if u wanna swap the bellhousings.

You would have thought a speedo would be required for an MOT but I couldn't find any reference to it on any MOT sites on the net, so maybe you don't. You would probably want one though, to check your speed when passing speed cameras
Do all the petrol 19's do 3500rpm at 70mph? A 2600rpm 70mph would be nice on my car but I doubt I could accelerate from there with an Energy engine without dropping a gear! |

get a TD, pulls nicely from 70 at 2600 rpm up to about 100, which I 'think' is around 3500rpm |

Aye like JB says the 2litre safranes etc with the JC5's run a different bellhousing pattern, the 1.4 project y also has the provision for a front mounted starter.
Anyway theres plenty of 2l 8V's aroudn that run the JC5 box, I'd steal my sisters but she'd notice.
you don't need a speedo for the mot, they can't test it.
pretty much all the petrol 19's are around 3500rpm. the ratios on the petrol 5 speeders range from 19 odd mph to bearly 22mph per 1 krpm.
2600rpm in 5th @ 70, sounds ok to me. what roughly 27mph per 1krpm. If you could get to 7 grand that would be 182, is that a challenge I see? lol |
