Think you'd need to remove the sump

lol why do you think the gaskets had it?

Gauge playing up? (these are useless at the best of times)

or is there no oil pressure (light on) and your getting knocking?

I think the gasket or front seal is fooked, as it happened when i had the 1.8 engine in, replaced them and it was sweet from there on in.

nothing to do with the pressure dewd, just that i have an oil leak coming from behind the back plate around the oil pump, it's above the crank so i would have said could only be one these two..

No biggy, I get the aux belt, crank pulley and oil pump cog and back plate, sort them both and hope this is it.

the oil pumps inside the engine and has no connection with the outside world.

The pumps driven but the aux shaft at the rear off a skew gear.

But the seal in the aux shaft housing is a likely suspect. Also check the p oil pressure sender isn't loose.

done the oil pump cover gasket, and front oil seal and put a gasket on on the water pump, as the blue sealer really wasn't enough, however i think the oil leak is higher up, although i will check the tightness of the pressure sensor.

right now i'm guessing it is either coming from the back corner, cam pulley end of the head gasket, or the cams however i know i sealed those cams up quality job new seals on end etc, and am thinking oil could have dripped down from the cams onto the face before it was tighened up enough.

with this in mind, i'm guessing it is possible to take the head off with the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold on, as long as i undo the exhausdt on the down pipe, undo the brackets on both manifolds which are bolted to the block, undo water pipes, undo fuel lines and a few wires unplugged, take the cam cover off, and undo head bolts and she should come off,

One other thing head gasket and head bolts have been on for 10 days, can i re-use??

yes th ehead can be emoved with those things still attached.

As for the gasket and bolts, yes you could but I wouldn't expect the gasket to be very happy about it.

I'd search more before whipping the head off.

oil channel runs up the front (inlet side) of the head around a headbolt, the one closest to the gearbox.

ahhh interesting as this leak is on the pulley side back corner, could be the cam faces perhaps, i had a gasket for the cam cover, but used only gasket sealer on the faces below this where you lock the cams down, as i had no gasket in the set for this, was this right or should there have been a gasket for these faces also

did u use new camshaft seals....and more precisley what ones....

the camshaft seals for a 1.8 are smaller than for a 2.0 if u got 1.8 ones by mistake, oil will be pissing out of them when u rev the engine.

humm, well i got a head gasket set for a williams 2L from ktec and in there were the mainfolds gaskets valve stem seals, rocker cover, and cam shaft seals.

could they have been wrong, considering the head gasket was wrong and was missing a couple water channels out of the gasket...

is there a way of knowing there different, i.e. numbers or colour or something

there is little text printed on the seal itself but its tiny...you'll be lucky to see it. 25x42x7 is the dims....cant remember if that is the larger of the two...either way the willy ones are 2mm bigger diameter ffs.

but, take the camcover off so u can see the cam pulleys and the seals behind them and run the engine so u can rev it...oil will visibly piss out of seals if it is wrong.

Anyway, the cam seals may be the prob but you should have known when installign them, they should have been tight, if they were the wee ones they would flop about.

yes your right only sealant holds the carriers to the head, no gasket.

Also if you undo the rear engine mount and jack up the engine then you will find you can get enough clearence to remove the exhaust cam pulley.
