What exactly do you want to know?

First 3 digits tell you the manufacturer

Next 4 tell you model, body and engine

Next 2 tell you the country the car was built

Last 8 is the cars unique chassis number

How to identify the model, body and engine maybe Smile
I got hold of the complete list of Renault 19's in Iceland and would like
to put them into more detailed catagories. Is it possible to tell from the VIN code the transmission, whether its auto or manual?

VF1C53D0512345678

VF1 - vehicle fabrication number renault

C53D - renault 19 16V 3 door hatch

A further breakdown on that:

C53D

C=3 Door

53=19

D=F7P (1.8 16v)

Engine numbers can be broke down the same.

First Digit=Block

Second=Head

Third=CC

Are there any differences between the 700 and 704 and other F7P engines?

yes otherwise what would be the point in having different types?

I assume you want me to list em.

700 adjustable CO no lambda 19. early fuel rail

704 cat and lambda most 19's came with both types of fuel rail

720 cat and lambda clio engine metal rail, diff inlet manifold clio

722 cat and lambda plastic fuel rail, inlet manifold change clio

I think thats right
