Hi
Over the past few months i have noticed my clio 16v starting to make some strange noises. Unfortunately i havnt had the chance or the money to take it to a garage so ithought i'd see if any of you lot here could shine some light on the matter.
1 - Knocking coming from the front passengers side arch. Sometimes when i turn corners or go over bumps. It also makes these knocking sounds when i jack up the car off the ground, and again when i lower it back down. I thought it could be the ball joint but not sure.
2 - Hissing noise coming from below the inlet manifold between the main block and the manifold. I checked the hoses and they are all in tact. The hissing continues for a few seconds when the engine stops but then fades out.
3 - From roughly the same place as the hissing is a high pitch ticking (sounds like an electrical ticking) this increses with the engine revs.
I had a thought that the hissing and ticking could be something to do with one of the injectors........perhaps??????
Any info on the matter would be greatfully recieved before i make the dreaded trip to the garage and pay for their next holiday to the Bahamas.
Cheers!! |

1# could b ball joint, but it sounds like the strut top bolts or even the rubbers at the top, but then again i dont know if clios hav got rubbers at the top of the strut??????

1. Top mount like Alan said.
2. how do you know where its coming from? Can you see in there? How small are you? Would you fit in my hand? With it running spray wd-40 up from under the manifold and see if the noise changes or the revs change. If so then the inlet manifold gaskets blown (never seen a blown one yet) or it may just be the noise from the ISCV or breather pipe.
3. The injectors tick very loudly on these engines. They are up the top so they can't be the source of the noise if your so sure its from underneath. But spray wd-40 on them as well and note if it changes. |

Cheers for the help!
Havnt got round to the WD40 tests yet, but just had a closer inspection of my suspension and there seems to be a lot of oil over my spring and top of the strut. These shocks are oil dampened i take it? |

All shockers are oil damped. Gas shockers also have oil in them but its sealed within a gas cylinder, this is what allows them to be used horizontally or inverted, theres a useless bit of info for you.
But if the shockers are leaking oil then they be buggered my man. They will not pass an mot liek that and the handling will be crap as well.
So new dampers and top mounts, use your existing springs and all probs with the front suspension will be sorted. |

Take it its best to replace both front shocks at the same time to get a matched ride either side? |
