will the brakes on an ABS car still work without the rear ABS sensors present?

Obviously I realise the ABS itself won't work, so no smartarse replies Smile

Brakes will still work, Just dont expect to steer if you lock up

Depends whether you've got bosch or bendix ABS

dont know, i'll have to have a look. Think it's Bendix though.

This only for my second guinea pig 19, my proper one doesnt have ABS at all, thank god.

Bendix won't, only ph1's and early ph2's had the bendix tho

So, what happens on the bendix system then? Pedal just goes to the floor and nothing?

after a few presses yes. Pedal does nothing. You will not stop.

Pug 405 MI16's ran the same setup and they have the same problems.

Bosch is a better system but its best to remove the ABS totally. Thats in all honesty.

Its to un-reliable and the braking effort is very different between the systems.

ok, how about if the sensors are present, but there are no rings for them to pick up on?

well its not gonna work is it. Why not use the discs with the sensors in them?

if its the bearing then swap the bearings. They are not press fits like the front.

Tap em out with a big socket and hammer.

why wont it work? how do the sensors know if there's a toothed ring present (when the car is stationary)?

so am i.

i cant really be arsed with swapping the rear discs etc, its only to bodge the car so i can move it. Still if it has to be done it has to be done.

it runs a self test up to around 5mph, it needs to get equal readings from all 4 wheels. If it doesn't get them the light goes on.

The sensors work on the exact same principle as the crank angle sensor for the engine.

So the ECU is looking for signals from all round, if its not gettign the back signals then the units gonna do overtime to try and stop them from what it assumes them locking. It won;t cos the lights on.

The bendix setup has no back up. The modulator, master cylinder etc are in 1 unit. So when it fails the lot fails.

the bosch setup is basically a normal system with an ABS unit piggybacked into it. When it fails they failsafe open so its a normal setup.

surely that bendix system should never hve been allowed to have been used...thats terrible. im sure these days something like that would never pass safety tests,.....failing and doing nothing!

the basic rule is there should be enough reserve presses to get to an authorised dealer for repair.

Should maybe get 10 presses from it ok. When you turn the igniton on and off it should reset the pump so you get braking again.

One of the brothers wrote off his Mi16 because of the brakes. I believe some of the ford scorpios used a similar setup

My new one has the bendix brakes Sad
