E for experience ,nothing else i am after .
i just got hold of a cylinder head of an escort from my neighbour ,i caught him in action chuck in it in the skip ,asked him nicely tadaaa .its mine .
its been standing in the garden for a long time so its well rusted and dirty but who cares i just want to take it apart to see all the bits and pieces and clean them as well .so it will be a nice experience for me . here are some pics .

ps:i did not see this worth putting in projects or progress section so the mods are more than welcome to put it where ever they like, saying that they have the power to do it anyway Laughing

cheers jonnyboy,
i think the same way ,the head is for free so no worries if i mess anything up . i took out these bits for a start there were 8 of them .are they the tappets ?

Image

i took an aluminium casing out as well ,3 bolts were holding it .looks like a thermostat housing as there was a thermostat in there Smile

this engine has been a good home for a spider colony by the looks ,i will do some cleaning first and want to take the valves out but dont know how ????? i am afraid i will need some specialist tool
any help much appreciated .
cheers

those are the rockers. its a pushrod engine ie. the camshaft is down in the block and operates the valves via the rockers via pushrods.

To remove the valves yes you will need valve spring compressors or you can bodge it with a socket and a hammer, but you wont be able to get them back together again using that method.

look after the collets as well!!

fiddly little buggers

but all adds to the fun.

but wont need to worry about them untill ya taken the valves out/putting em back in.

them heads are quite nice to work on..

remember my mates old XR2 with it in.

Did it only come in 1600 form?

not to sure about that.

i found soakin the head with thinners or Gunk then sprinkle washing powder all over it...leave it soak for a while...then pour kettle after kettle of boiling water over it to clean it....proved well.

ahh the wonderous Ford CVH cylinder head.

Also its not a pushrod engine its an ohc engine, the cam is run in the head uder the rockers. In the pics you can see under the rockers the hydraulic lifters.

As for capacity, wellin europe tyhey had it in 1.1 but not in the uk they had 1.4 and 1.6 and the 1.8 but the 1.8 is totally different and I have a 1.8 head in my shed

hit them with a heavy lump hammer....pain in the arse, you might aswell spend £20 or whatever at Machine Mart and get a spring compressor

all xr2/3's were the 1.6.

#Use a deep socket with an extension on it and belt it with a lump hammer as Stan said.

But pain in the arse, valve spring compressors are cheap enough these days.

I will move this to the members projects forum I think.

Go to halfords and you will see them. If not ask. The dearer one is better as it is reversable and both ends are adjustable but unless your gonna be doign a lot of heads or 16V heads I';d leave it and go with the cheaper forked end type. You will know what I mean when you see it.

how do you work this thing out chris ? i put it on the valve on one side and the spring on the other side but after tightening a bit the adjustable handle just pops out .it does not do the compressing action. what do i do?

right you have it on the right way.

Basically you fit it then push the handle in, it locks in place.

If you push it and it just pushes back loosen it off a tad and try again.

Also if the caps not going down a quick tap on the cap will free it so you can compress it easily.
