Have a 1993 Renault 19 16 valve
My gear box is crunching in second gear... Selector feels fine, can select second perfectly under 25mph. Gear oil level is correct. All other gear selection is fine. Does this sound like a synch' problem? Please say it sounds like a knackered engine mount. Actually don't as the rear mount looks just as much fun... Any help/advice much appreciated, thanks. |

2nd gear synchro's gone.
mine is the same, jumps out of 2nd when cold as well.
Its a lot worse if its light throttle, say its in 2nd and no throttle its fine, if its in 2nd and I'm gunnign it its fine. if I am in 2nd foot lightly on the throttle say crawling in a carpark it will pop out a lot.
I have yet to change and even check my box oil but the other gears are fine, I am living with it. |

Cheers. Will leave for a while. I read somewhere that the TD gearbox would fit. What are your views on this mate. |

yes it will fit.
The TD box is differently geard so it will make the car slower but might save on petrol on nice long motorway slogs at high speed. |

So a 16 valve box it is then. Are phase 3 boxes stronger than phase 2's ? |

after sep '94 = phase 3
allegedly they have some bigger bearings or something in the gearbox amongst other things.
schakal, strongest box to fit the valver is a JC5 as found in the williams clio and 2.0 16v megane coupe. Or the TD as mentioned if you dont mind the diesel ratios. |

cheers superman,so in a basic way does this mean the 2.0 16v gearbox will give more power/torque compared with a 1.8 16v box or is it going to be the same but last longer? |

well, the box wont 'give' any more power or torque, thats the engine's job. What it will do is put up with more power/torque being put through it without breaking.
ie, no performance difference except due to the differing ratios |

as far as i know the gear ratios are different on the ph3 for a start but i dont know what they are
i remember someone saying the interior bits are different color
and the n reg hatchback valver i have seen lately had 5 doors and no trip computer like yours jonnyboy.so you might be the owner of a ph3 |

I think 'ph3' included things like airbags and optional a/c and various other bits a peices. Not sure about gear ratios tho, only thought they changed between ph1/2 |

5th is slightly longer on the phase 3 box for more relaxed motorway cruising.
Phase 3s have no trip comp.
only phase 3s can be the true 'executive' model
5 door hatchback came in at phase 3
did i miss anything? |
