if it's off the road, declare it SORN.

if it's parked on the public highway it has to be road legal, MOTed, Taxed and Insured.

DVLA has a new (ish) computer system up and running.
Basicly if you dont have your car taxed or declared SORN then it sends you out a £80 fine and is liable to be removed from the public highway, taken to a pound where you will then need to pay release and storage fees (typicaly £150+) to get it back, you also get a fine as well, nice huh!

Remember it's up to the previous owner to send off the V5, that owner is liable for the car, parking tickets etc whilst the V5 is in thier name.

When the previous owner sends off the V5, you will get it about 2 - 3 weeks later and road tax form thru the post as well (knowing DVLA you will prolly get that form before the V5)
Remember when you tax a car you need to produce the V5 in your name with your address, you can however get your road tax at the post office by filling in a V5 form at the same time and then the PO sends it off for you.

So if its insured and MOTed, u can pop down the PO, fill in the V5 request form at the counter, show the cover note or insurance cert, the MOT cert, pays your money and get her taxed.

the only way to drive a car witout tax and mot is to drive it to a prebooked mot test , i dont %100 know what happens when police stops you in that situation but i booked an mot test which i never attended ,called the ins company to swao the ins on the chammy the day before i moved the car and drove it from pontypool to barry(30-35miles) .never been stopped .

if you are gonna do it ,do it on a saturday or sunday morning .no cops around that time .

believe it or not, and i know this is the stupidist thing you are likely to hear in a while, but:

if a car is declared SORN, it CAN be parked on the road!

this is fact as told to me by a police officer and a DVLA enforcment officer when my car got clamped for no tax

righty ladies, I beleive I knwo a wee bit about this area, so does George hes got nearly a grand in fines as a result for his clio!

To drive an untaxed/unmot'd car legally it has to be going to a from a pre-booked MOT test.

If the police stop you then they will check with the garage to see if its true. So make sure you give tyhe garage your name and reg number. If you don;'t attend this pre-booked mot then the garage won;t be happy and the police may check in and they will say you never attended which is lkying to a police officer. Frankly if you booked it and didn't attend then you deserve a kicking and in my book your a timewasting tosser. I hate arseholes that fuck you about.

Roadside vans, yes theres many about. They get a snap of the VRN and depending on factors a mugshot of the driver/passenger. The number is then processed and a VRN without a valid tax disc will be sent a fine.

Now if like George you get snapped by 3 different vans on the same journey you have to pay all the fines, even though its a single trip and not 3 seperate ones. If you don't pay you will be summoned to court where you have to produce insurance, mot and so on.

If your tax disc has fallen off etc then the DVLA will not bother, the police however will slap a £60 fine on the screen for failing to display. You will then get a letter later in the week in formal writing about the offence. Its a civil offence not criminal btw.

If a vehicle is parked on the public highway like Neo said it needs tax, mot and insurance.

If its sorned then it can be ont he road but it needs 3rd party liability insurance.

SORN is not transferable either, so if its sorn then the keeper changes you need to apply for sorn again.

To avoid the tax cameras, they are normally parked on motorway bridges etc to scan the motorway, and in bus stops and laybys etc.

To avoid being done, you need to see the van first, if you see it sit about 1 inch from the car in front, they cannot get a pic of the number plate that way and there is no frontal camera on the van. I cannot condone this as its breakign the highway code after all...
