Right heres what happened.

Driving along a dual carriage way Saturday, pulled up to a round about and stopped, put the car in first gear, went to pull away ( a bit sharpish) and nothing, clutch released no drive! can but the car in first, second, third forth, fifth, with no clutch and the thing dont bloody move. Can rev the engine for all its worth in gear but nudder, nothing at all.

Any Ideas?

sounds like that diff circlip....does the speedo go up?

depends, some are fine and will take sticking a turbo on it (like chets) and hard driving (like my current chamade). But other will pop it no bother even at standard power liek my old hatches.

The older boxes seem less prone to it and when the clio 16V came along they suffer it a lot so its like a dodgy batch.

But its not that common. More are fine than not.

I'm just lucky I guess. Well anyway the car is coming off the road for the winter, and I will be driving my MPV. Yes I am a fair weather cabriolet driver. So I have a few months to get all those little anoying things done. So I guess there will be some more Tech questions coming up.

Car is now drivable, taken a while though, been off the road since November 21st, now just need insurance, tax and 2 new tyres,

(hmmmm 2 new tyres, probably why the Diff curclip went in the first place!)

watch it thou Mals, i had/have the same problem with my ph1

it's gone now 3 times in 3 months and the ph1 hardly gets driven at the mo, since the last time i did it (about 2 weeks ago) it lasted 4 miles!

gearbox is full of nice fresh oil right up to the filler so i know thats not whats causing it to pop off.

Chris H suggested i get it the circlip welded in but i cba with that now, it's coming off the road for a rebuild and i'm gonna get a JC5 box for it instead.

TBH I think the 1.4 etc boxes are the ones to go for. Cheaper yes you will rev higher slightly at speed but I have never seen one pop. In the white chamade I reckon thats a 1.4 box for the revs it does. Its not gone bang and its been ragged senseless with no oil.

Also the old 1.4 could wheelspin for scotland and no probs ever with the diff.

dont spose u know the ratios on the JC5 compared to the JB3 ?

having done a search on here it seems the concensus is that the jc5 is the stronger box althou i am curious on the 1.4 box now (thanks Chris lol)

theres about 1 million, yes one meeeellion different ratio JC5 boxes.

Ph1 16V runs a JB3 051 ph2 runs the shorter geared and more girly JB3 089

Ph1 1.4 box runs about the same revs as the ph2 16V box

right well as i am off to the renault breakers this weekend i'll see if there is a 1.4 kicking about to have the box off.

Anything has to be better than doing that damn circlip every few miles lol

bear in mind you will have the gap at the bottom due to the differeing sumps

ahhh yes, so prolly gonna have to fabricate some kind of sheilding cos i dont want stones or other misc crap getting flung up into it.
