While changing the stat I dropped the lower of the two bolts holding the casing to the head, and would you f**king believe it it has fallen into the gearbox bellhousing via the timing window. Why the hell did they leave an opening there big enough for stuff to fall into in the first place?!!!!!
Is it still driveable, or (as I am thinking) am I looking at the bolt getting caught in the clutch somehow and causing big problems?
Any way you can think of to get it out (other than removing the box, which I seriously dont want to do )
Oh and I am hunting as we speak but is there anywhere under the bonnet I could borrow a bolt the same size from (10mm head) to give me a quick fix till I get to a scrappies?
Well pissed off. Should only have taken 5 mins. |

underneath theres a plate steel cover on there, undo it and the bolt will drop out. I wouldn;t recomend runnign the car as they can jam between the fly and bellhousing and crack the box |

Chris i've been under and looked - i took off the plastic cover covering the linkage and have had a good hunt but can't find a steel plate? is it not immediately obvious, maybe it makes up part of the box and you have to undo box bolts to undo it?
The car is a 1.4 RT (clio) 95 reg if that is any help. |

still can't find the steel plate
i've removed the rubber sureround from the clutch fork lever and can see inside the box a bit. I might be able to see / get the bolt if i remove the fork - is this possible / wise? (I have a very handy flexible grabber) The fork seems quite loose as it is, although I admit I cant really remember exactly how it looks inside the housing!
Thanks |

Could you use a magnet to get the bolt out? |

well becasue the magents gonna rub against everything there and a telescopic one ain't gonan go round a corner.
6 13mm bolts and 2 16mm bolts will take the cover off and thats it. |

all done....thanks again Chris. Having the cover welded to the tie bar was an arse as the downpipe was in the way, which in turn meant i needed to get the fan off to get decent access. The flywheel only left about 4 mm room between it and the casing, so using masking tape i stuck the bolt thread in a groove on the flywheel, turned the crank bit by bit and eased her up until she came out.
Why leave that hole exposed though? Seems daft to me anyway! |
