Just wondering what's the most that's been achieved with a 1.8 16v lump? I'm planning on some serious work in 12 months time and would prefer to try the unique route of the 1.8 rather than the more common 2L route.

depends what you mean, standard (as in stock plenum etc but internals uprated/blueprinted) or turbo/TBs?

Anything mate. I'd probably be getting any work done (be it 1.8 or 2.0) on another engine before getting it dropped in, so I'm interested to know what's been achieved by any method really. Not keen on forced induction though, much prefer n/a.

well with a decent TB setup and the rest of the engine sorted, you'd be looking at over 200bhp, £££ though!

if you have the cash I could get you putting out over 1000bhp, engine wouldn't last for more than an hour or so though.

Running the stock plenum you can get 180bhp relatively easily, headwork, cams and a decent engine and good mapping can achieve it.

Matts old un was 180 odd bhp, it was sold and believed to be a 2 litre with 200bhp, went like a rocket smoked like a chimney, but thats what heppens when you don;t replace rinsg etc when you rebuild an engine! It was a 1.8 but it was quick and it was Nick (HP) that told him it was a 1.8.

Yopu need to ask yourself what do you want? A high bhp figure means feck all, I have driven very high bhp figure cars and unless the capacity is equally big they are a big let down.

Re-timing the stock cams can bump up the midrange torque quite a bit but the power will stay the same or even lower it by a couple of bhp but its a faster car.

Cheers guys.

I reckon my budget would probably be about £3k tbh, and it would still have to be a useable everyday car. How much would blue-printing cost and would it be worth getting done do you think?
