not a question, but anyway...
Rear engine mounts are a constant source of annoyance for me (and Chris, and a lot of 19 owners), they just dont seem up to job to be quite frank.
I put a new one in my 16v just over a year ago and its already starting to look slightly the worse for wear. In the past Chris has tried filling the voids with sealant, chopped rubber etc, with limited success. Seeing as i have access to superior chemicals, i thought i would give it a shot and see if i fared any better.
So i took a break from my tea drinking at work yesterday and went down the workshop to set about it. The chemical in question is called 'polysulfide' and is used for weatherseals on various aircraft windscreens, Airbuses, Tornados, Harriers etc. It is extremely tough and durable but still flexible. I have cast bouncy balls out of it before. Should do the trick i thought.
Comes in 2 parts and is mixed together and dispensed in 'shots' into an air powered gun from this machine:
I washed the mount itself down with Methyl Ethyl Ketone, to get rid of the crap that was on it and also to slightly chemically soften the surface of the existing rubber, then gunned a lot of the polysulfide in.
till there was plenty
then smotthed it down
and left it to cure over night in the warm room. Next day i tidied it up a bit. Looks like it should do the job
Next time i change a mount, one like this will be used. In the meantime, if anyone else wants to give one a shot, let me know. |

the first time i have seen an engine mount in my life
what actually happens when its buggered ???? is the rubber bit wearing away or is it the metal part corroding etc ????
looks good though ,i reckon that stuff will add extra strength to the rubber ,good job |

the rubber goes, my rear engine mount is on its way out, can tell by the wonderful way my gear stick moves backwards and forwards when i give it some throttle or back off, the engine moves cos of the knackered mount also moving the gearbox and the gearstick lol. |

If anyone wants to send me an old mount and cover postage back to them, I am happy to fill it up for you. |
