i just got my welder goin the other day, that free one...

i treated it to a new roll of flux core wire...got a mask and tin snips, a few sheets of steel...

marvellous fun. patched up the hole in the rear arch on the hatch...now theres a few holes on the chammy thatened patchin up before mot next month.... Very Happy

have you got one of the auto darkening masks? they are shit hot, is alot easier than a flip one, or one you hold by hand, a: once you've flicked your head, your hands moved from the spot you wanna weld, and b: you sometimes need 2 hands!

no i dont unfortunately...they are well cool, used to have one in work.

but i do have a head mounting one, but as u said its stilla bit of an arse flipping it down without moving your position!

I've got an autodarkening one and its mild steel de-cat. fitted it now looks the part I must say Very Happy

I do enjoy welding. get a magnet JB they are bloody handy to have use it to hold the steel in place tack weld it remove magnet then then do your weld. for body pannels you will find trigger welding the best way. Wink

magent eh....good idea...for little patches behind a panel i was goin to tack a nail or something to the patch so its something to hold onto topull the patch tight against the back of the whole to get a few tacks on...then grindi t offf.

whats trigger welding?

JB I am surprised you don;t knwo abotu the magnat trick, its th eonly way to do it.

Trigger welding as far as I know mean get the ire about an inch out of the nozzle and short bursts of weld micro second long so you can see whats happening better.

as in just applying small tacks rather than one continuous bead? i did that anyway as one continuous blast just blows holes in the thin body work....im new to all this welding. quite fun tho.

got a few hole on the chammy to patch up before mot so ill be gettin plenty of practise.

just practise with odd bits of metal..

eaiser then blasting holes in the car.

no its shaped now and sprayed with high temp paint. trigger welding is were you weld a spot cool weld then weld next spot 1/2 way over the previouse spot and so on untill you have gone around the section you want to weld in doing this you don't get as much heat build up in the metal as you would if you were doing a run, so therefore it won't warp the metal as much if at all depending on the thickness of the metal.

just patchin up a hole seems simple enough. i can manage that...good thing is that it doesnt have to look good, just be strong, as it will be filled over.

where are the holes JB?

I need to get my hands on a MIG welder as if I had one there would be all sorts of stuff done and any nukber of useless tat fabricated like a fork holder etc.

mostly under the skirts... on the top of the sill under where the screws ontop of the skirts goes.

god let me try again...

on top of the skirt under the fixing screws.

also, if u go fwd along thr sill, on top, just under the frt door hinge, there seems to be some sort of rubber grommit, thats rottenaround there too..

thats where the white 1 has a hole. Only 1 mind, under the very front fixing screw at the top.

The old blue hatches sills were in a right bad way

the rubber grommet is where they all rot as well, they also tend to have a coating of slime on them as well! Most of the time though its just surface rust I can't really think of a really bad one there.

getting the sills off is a skill which I can explain to you if you wish!
