16v 19 is quicker than both the BX and 405 MI16

But the MI-16 engine is a lot more tuneable. That's why there are a lot more heavily modified MI-16 engines than there are 16V's.

True Chris, but it's something to bear in mind especially if the guy's prepared/wanting to spend a bit of cash on the engine, you want to start out with something that's gonna respond well to the modifications!

(wanting a 1.8 even more now)

Might go look down Launcton today with a mate who got some Orion allys yesterday there are apperently 3 19's with the 1.8 16v in em'

theres a nice phase 1 hatch on ebay with a blown headgasket thats not too far from me. Buy that, and ill get it and fix it for you for a few quid...
